Description
Hydrangea paniculata Groundbreaker® Ruby is a paniculate hydrangea with a very unusual, spreading and dense habit, which does not exceed 40cm in height. From summer to autumn, this groundcover shrub is covered with changing panicles ranging from white to deep pink. Compact and highly decorative, it can be used to create beautiful borders or original container displays. Give it a humus-rich, well-drained and moist soil, in sun or partial shade, to enjoy its long colourful flowering.
Hydrangea paniculata, also called mountain hydrangea, is a particularly hardy shrub of the Hydrangeaceae family native to the deciduous forests of China and Japan.
Belonging to the Groundbreaker® series developed by Living Creations BV, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Ruby’ (‘LC NO27’ PBRPending) is a dwarf cultivar with low, dense and spreading growth, perfectly suited to small spaces as well as mass plantings. It does not exceed 40cm in height for about 70cm in spread and presents fine and intense branching from the base. Its flowering begins in July and can last until November; the inflorescences remain beautiful for nearly 100 days. The conical panicles are upright and well-distributed, about 10cm long, opening white at first before taking on light pink shades, then deep pink in autumn. The deciduous foliage is composed of small, narrow, light green leaves. They turn yellow in autumn before falling. Hardy to –30°C, this cultivar does not mind cold or late frosts, as it flowers on the current year's growth.
With its naturally low and dense habit, Hydrangea paniculata Groundbreaker® 'Ruby' can be used as a groundcover, at the edge of borders, to carpet the base of taller shrubs, to line a path or even in a container on the terrace. It also blends very well into flower arrangements. Its gradation of colour from white to deep pink will be highlighted by silver foliage such as that of lamb's ear (Stachys byzantina) and the light summer, white to red summer blooms of Gaura (bee blossom). You can also combine it with annuals such as Ageratum 'Cushion Violet' and small fine grasses like Carex 'Everlime'. This variety fits into contemporary designs as well as naturalistic gardens. Cut its inflorescences to create beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care
Hydrangea paniculata 'Groundbreaker Ruby' is undemanding regarding soil type, as long as it is not too heavy and not too lime-bearing. It requires a sunny, non-scorching position or partial shade. When planting, set it in deeply worked soil. A base fertiliser (horn or dehydrated blood) will help the establishment of your plant and feed it without risk of burning. If your soil tends to be dry, mix well-rotted compost into the earth when backfilling the planting hole, mulch the base, and provide a watering basin on the surface. Spring growth is quite late.
Hydrangea Paniculata: These shrubby hydrangeas with elongated inflorescences are more drought-tolerant and establish easily even in non-acidic soil. They flower profusely from June until the frosts. Planted in the sun, their inflorescences colour in autumn.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.

This will vary depending on where you live:
