Description

The Ageratum Cushion Violet is a delightful variety of Mexican ageratum that forms a very floriferous cushion of dark pink and mauve, both in pots and in the ground. The plant develops into a small tuft that remains compact throughout the season. It truly covers itself in dark purple-pink buds that open into fluffy mauve pompoms. This variety also offers good tolerance to sun and rain. Ideal for animating terraces and balconies for long weeks, this annual beautifully enhances borders and flower beds.

The Dwarf Ageratum Cushion Violet belongs to the asteraceae family. This variety is derived from the Ageratum houstonianum, a perennial plant cultivated as an annual, native to Central America and the Caribbean. This Violet Cushion selection forms rounded and bushy cushions, 25-30 cm (10-12in) in height and 25 cm (10in) wide. Very branched and covered in hairs, its numerous stems rise gracefully while spreading. The leaves, also hairy, are toothed and oval-shaped. They are sometimes heart-shaped at the base, with a somewhat dark bluish-green colour. This foliage is theoretically evergreen in winter, if not frozen. From April to the beginning of autumn, the flowers bloom continuously if care is taken to remove faded ones as they appear. The inflorescences are capitula assembled in bouquets. They are initially dark purple-pink and then open into mauve, forming beautiful feathery pompoms that almost completely hide the foliage. Purple buds and mauve pompoms mix on the plant in a delightful colour scheme. The plant dies with the first frosts.

Mexican ageratums are often planted in urban landscaping. Their floribundance and bright colours allow for interesting combinations with many other low-growing plants in flower beds: marigolds, lantanas, celosias, lobelias, marigolds, or red salvias. It is easy to create a pastel carpet by combining them with pink begonias and impatiens, or with fragrant alyssums at the forefront of the flower beds. The Cushion Violet selection allows for beautiful flowering pots with fuchsias, indoors, on the terrace or balcony.

Mexican ageratum is a plant that promotes the pollination work of insects. Bees, butterflies, and others.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in shelters (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively avoided.
