Description

Euonymus phellomanus is a deciduous bush appreciated for its bark composed of four wings and for its remarkable pink fruiting which brings an original touch to half-shade borders. This spindle tree will be ideal in a border, isolated, or in a hedge.

Euonymus phellomanus has a rounded bushy habit. At ripeness, this bush will reach 4m (13ft 1in) in height and spread. It has charming dark green foliage, composed of ovate leaves, rounded at their ends. It is deciduous and will warm your garden during the autumn with the glowing red change of its leaf colour. A discreet flowering will give way in autumn to an astonishing pink fruiting, containing bright orange seeds. The branches composed of four corky wings complete this tableau of curiosities.

Quite hardy, the phellomanus spindle will thrive in ordinary, humus-bearing soil, not too dry to fresh. Full sun or half-shade exposure will suit it. It will be pleasant in a shrubbery, composed of Choisyas or Viburnums, but it will also be appreciated isolated, in a bocage hedge or even cultivated in coppice shoots.
