Description

Euphorbia characias Tasmanian tiger or variegated Euphorbia is a perennial with very unique shades. Its long evergreen leaves are bluish-green with a cream-coloured margin that is very bright. The whole plant is enhanced from April to May by a spectacular flowers of the same colour. Euphorbia brings a lot softness to flowerbeds.

Euphorbias have multiple characteristics. The common features of the characias species include highly decorative foliage and flowers, a preference for a sunny position and a well-drained or even dry, rocky and even poor soil. Their stems start from the base and form a rather tall bushy clump, 80 cm (32in) and more for Tasmanian Tiger.  They are covered with lanceolate leaves that are rather long, minimum 10 cm (4in). Flowers are grouped in cymes at least 15 cm (6in) in height and covered with numerous small cyathia (this name is mainly attributed to Euphorbias).  They are very delicate: with their bracts resembling collars, they appear like large bouquets of bells. Euphorbias are quite essential in flowerbeds: they provide volume, long-lasting foliage, and brightly coloured flowers.

The only downside is that these plants have a significant characteristic. Their sap is an irritating and toxic latex. Always remember to handle them with gloves, keep an eye on children playing nearby, and warn them.

Expected in exotic gardens, Euphorbia characias Tasmanian Tiger is nonetheless indispensable for fans of romance. Indeed, its tender colour can accompany spring bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils, and Bluebells with a lot of charm. Its colour and silhouette allow for numerous compositions e.g. submerged in a two-tone flowerbed, in contrast with a dark green background or simply as a highlight in the garden.
