Description

Aster ageratoides 'Asran' is also known as Japanese Aster or Michaelmas Daisy. Its dense flowering transforms it into a real cushion of small pale lilac flowers. It will be appreciated in borders or mixed borders.

Aster ageratoides 'Asran' is a versatile perennial. It can reach a height of 90 cm (35 in) with a spread of 45 cm (18 in). It is resistant to diseases, especially powdery mildew. During the months of September to October, the tips of its stems will bear a cloud of pink-lilac flowers that transition to lavender-blue with a yellow centre. Its flowering will brighten up borders that have been battered by summer. The foliage is green and lanceolate in shape with roughly toothed margins.

It is very hardy and can withstand temperatures below -15 °C (5 °F). It can be paired with shrubs like cotinus or pollarded elderberries, as well as perennials and grasses such as daylilies or fescues. Easy to grow, it thrives in all types of soil without excessive water. It prefers sunny exposures.

Planting and care

Plant your Aster ageratoides 'Asran' in spring or autumn, preferably in a sunny location, although it can tolerate light shade. It looks best in an open position. This aster is very cold-resistant and can even tolerate poor soils, including clayey ones. However, ensure good drainage by adding gravel mixed with soil from your garden when planting. In June, remember to mulch your flower beds to keep the soil around your perennials cool.
