More information

A small hardy perennial for rock gardens, this anthemis forms a low cushion of finely cut, green to greyish leaves. In summer, it bears white daisies with a yellow centre. Plant it at the edge of a low wall, in a trough or dry border, in full sun, in very well-drained soil, even poor and stony. This hardy plant mainly dislikes stagnant moisture in winter.

Description

Anthemis cretica, the Cretan chamomile or mountain chamomile, is a small rock garden perennial with finely divided, greyish, deciduous leaves. Its low-growing vegetation hugs stones and the edges of low walls in poor soil. Its white flowers with a yellow centre resemble small daisies and stand out clearly against the foliage. Use this little wild plant to bring flowers to a trough, an alpine rock garden, a stony bank or a gravel border.

This species belongs to Asteraceae, the daisy family, along with yarrows and artemisias. It is also known under the synonyms Anthemis montana, Anthemis pontica, Anthemis saxatilis and Anthemis cretica subsp. pontica. In the wild, it can be found from southern and central-eastern Europe to the Caucasus, Turkey, the Near East and Iran. It favours dry alpine grass, stony slopes, scree, rocks and scrub. It is a Mediterranean alpine plant, more than a garrigue plant: it tolerates dry and cold conditions well, but dislikes heatwaves, heavy soils and stagnant moisture in winter. This perennial forms a low cushion, somewhat woody at the base. It reaches 10 to 20cm in height, with a spread of 20 to 30cm. The leaves are deeply divided into narrow segments, giving the clump a light, slightly feathery appearance. Their colour ranges from bright green to greyish green, with a light down on the most alpine forms. The flower stems rise above the foliage and bear solitary heads, 2.5 to 4.5cm wide. Each head combines white ligulate flowers in a crown with yellow tubular flowers in the centre. Flowering occurs from June to August in temperate climates; it may begin in May in mild climates and shifts towards summer at higher altitudes. The arrival of heat and drought stops the flowering. The foliage is deciduous.
Its species name, cretica, evokes Crete, but the plant belongs to a highly variable botanical group from the Mediterranean and neighbouring mountains.

Plant Anthemis cretica in a pocket of soil between two stones, at the edge of dry stone steps or on a well-exposed low wall. You can pair it with a small pink such as Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Eydangeri’, which forms bluish cushions with magenta flowers, pale yellow Helianthemum ‘Wisley Primrose’, Teucrium ackermannii and Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’.

Planting and care

Plant Anthemis cretica in spring in cold or humid regions, and in early autumn in gardens with mild climates, so that the plant establishes itself before the heat. Choose a very bright, sunny position, but avoid the foot of a wall in very hot climates. Provide it with poor, stony, sandy or gravelly soil, always very well-drained. In heavy soil, plant it in a rockery or in a pocket of soil lightened with gravel. Do not add compost. Water regularly the first summer, then only during prolonged dry periods. Protect the plant from stagnant moisture in winter, which is more damaging than dry cold.
