Description
Agastache ‘Danish Delight’ is an aromatic perennial with an upright habit, producing large magenta-pink spikes throughout the summer. This eye-catching flowering is visible from afar, rising above green foliage; the foliage is peppermint-scented when crushed. Plant it in full sun, in a perennial bed, a tall border, or in a large container. Charming and natural, it pairs perfectly with ornamental grasses and meadow flowers.
This agastache belongs to the Lamiaceae family, like sages, mints and catmints. It is a hybrid, sometimes sold under the name Agastache ‘Danish D’.
'Danish Delight’ is a perennial plant: its stems die back or dry out in winter, then regrow in spring. Tina Moeller selected it in Aabybro, Denmark, after a cross-breeding made in 2016 between Agastache ‘Blue Boa’ and another hybrid selection. The variety was retained in 2017, then propagated by cuttings. The fast-growing plant forms an upright and vigorous clump. It develops quadrangular, slightly hairy stems, typical of many Lamiaceae. Allow for approximately 70cm in height for the foliage, 80cm at flowering time and 45 to 50cm in width. The aromatic leaves are opposite on the stems, simple, ovate with a slightly heart-shaped base, strongly toothed on the margin, finely hairy. Flowering repeats from late June or July until September-October depending on the climate. The flowers are small, tubular and formed of two lips, enclosed in purple calyces. They cluster in whorls around the floral axis and form erect, thick, dense spikes, magenta pink to violet fuchsia. In heavy soils, stagnant water is more likely to kill the plant than dry cold.
Plant this agastache in groups of three to five, in the middle of a sunny border or in a wide flowering border. You can pair it with Panicum virgatum ‘Hanse Herms’, a large ornamental grass whose foliage turns red in summer. In the front, shorter Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ will offer red flowers at the base of the border. Add Echinacea purpurea ‘Green Twister’, for example, with green and magenta petals. Sow love-in-a-mist and cornflowers among these perennials to lighten the overall effect.

Planting and care
Plant Agastache 'Danish Delight' in spring, after the last hard frosts, or in early autumn in regions with mild winters. Choose a sunny, warm, and open position. This perennial requires a light, well-drained, fairly rich soil, even slightly lime-bearing, and particularly dislikes stagnant moisture in winter. In clayey, heavy soil, add gravel, coarse sand, or a drainage layer at the bottom of the hole. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then only during drought once the plant is well established. Avoid adding manure, which softens the stems and shortens its lifespan.
It is not particularly prone to diseases or pests, except for powdery mildew, which can affect the leaves during drought.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
