Description
Chinese Chives, also known as Garlic Chives, is an aromatic vegetable plant that is similar to Chives. It develops flat leaves that have a mild garlic flavour. They can be enjoyed raw, finely chopped in salads, or cooked in omelettes and soups. The white star-shaped flowers can also be consumed. Plant your young plants after the last frost and harvest the foliage from June to September.
Chinese Chives, in Latin Allium tuberosum, is a flavourful perennial aromatic plant. It belongs to the same family as garlic, onion, and shallot. It is a larger version of chives with a clumping habit, reaching a height of up to 70 cm (28in), and hollow, cylindrical leaves. It is a bulbous perennial plant that will be cultivated for two or three years because beyond that, it tends to become less productive.
Its mild flavour, which resembles garlic, complements many dishes, especially in Asian cuisine. It is also used in Western cuisine to flavor salads, soups, etc.
Harvest: Harvesting chives extends over a long period, from late spring to autumn, and is simply done using scissors to cut the stems at the base of the clump. Regular harvesting stimulates the renewal of the foliage.
Storage: Chives can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days or preserved for a few months by drying or freezing. However, it is preferable to consume them freshly picked to fully enjoy their aroma.
Gardener's tip: To limit watering, we recommend, from late May, mulching the soil with thin successive layers of grass clippings, preferably mixed with dead leaves. This protective layer helps keep the soil moist and also reduces weed growth. The mulch should ideally be renewed every year.

Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Chinese chives like to be planted next to carrots (protection against flies) but don't appreciate being next to legumes from the Fabaceae family (beans, peas, fava beans). Very easy to grow, it performs remarkably well in pots.
Chinese chives prefer moist and moderately rich soil. If compost is needed, it should preferably be added in autumn, in the form of well-rotted compost, by loosening the soil to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having thoroughly loosened the soil as you would for any vegetable cultivation. Chinese chives can also be grown in pots.
Planting takes place in spring, from March to May, or in autumn, in September-October. The plants should be spaced 20 cm (8in) apart in all directions. Loosen the soil deeply. Dig a hole (3 times the volume of the root ball), place the root ball, and cover with soil. Firmly press down and water to keep the soil moist. You can propagate the plants by dividing the clumps in October.
Chinese chives produce beautiful white flowers, but it is recommended to cut the stems before they flower to preserve the aroma of the foliage.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
