Description

Begonia Odorata Angélique is a fragrant, trailing tuberous begonia that quickly forms little clouds of double, creamy-white flowers edged with soft pink. Its long, arching stems are covered all summer long with corollas reminiscent of camellias. Planted in a hanging basket, planter, or raised bowl, this plant offers a long flowering period that will be beautiful on a slightly shaded balcony.

A member of the Begoniaceae family, Begonia ‘Angélique’ belongs to the Odorata group, which brings together tuberous begonias with fragrant flowers and a trailing habit, specially selected for pots and hanging baskets. It is a herbaceous, tuberous plant, 20 to 35 cm tall and 25 to 35 cm wide, forming a dense clump of flexible stems that cascade downwards. The deciduous foliage is medium green, fleshy, with finely toothed edges. The very double, 8-10 cm diameter flowers are creamy-white with a slightly yellowish centre and display a more pronounced pink reverse or edging; they follow one another from June to October, sometimes until the first frosts, depending on the climate. The vegetation dies back in winter: the non-hardy tubers, sensitive to frost, must be overwintered dry and frost-free, then replanted in spring in a light, damp, but well-drained soil, in partial shade.
Tuberous begonias have become a Belgian speciality and are used notably for the famous flower carpet on the Grand-Place in Brussels, renewed every two years.

In the garden, Begonia ‘Angélique’ is best planted in containers, hanging baskets, and planters, alone or mixed with other decorative foliage. It can be paired with a trailing fuchsia like Deep Purple’, the coloured foliage of Heuchera ‘Marmalade’ or the long, variegated leaves of Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’. For a romantic combination, pair it with another coloured fragrant Odorata begonia, ‘Red Glory’, and the trailing foliage of Plectranthus coleoides ‘Variegatus’

Planting and care

Plant your Odorata Angélique begonias in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light, damp soil rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soils; lighten it if necessary with sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot around twenty centimetres, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Plant the begonia hollow side up, and cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in a pot kept under cover, and moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers. Dig up the bulbs before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter.
