The first flower was huge, the following ones are of average size. Very cheerful in a flower bed.

Description

The Dahlia 'Myrtle's Folly' is a variety of Giant Dahlia. The cactus flowers with frilly tips have peach-orange petals tinged with fuchsia pink, and they bloom from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow, and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 120cm (47in) in height, are topped with ligulate flowers in peach and lilac pink, measuring 17cm (7in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Myrtle's Folly' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor and sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Myrtle's Folly' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The 'Myrtle's Folly' Dahlia should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with 60cm (24in) spacing. Always use stakes and tie the young stems loosely. Add slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a dark, cool, well-ventilated place that is not too damp. Transplant in early May when there is no longer a risk of frost.
