Description

The Dahlia 'Promise' is a Fimbriata or semi-cactus lace variety. Its large flowers are filled with narrow, forked petals, partially curled in on themselves. They display a very uniform lemon-yellow colour, of great luminosity. The plant flowers from July to October and provides excellent cut flowers.

The genus Dahlia belongs to the Asteraceae botanical family. The Dahlia 'Promise' is a tuberous plant; it develops underground tubercles that store reserves; in our climate, they are dug up before winter to protect them from frost. This cultivar is classified among the Fimbriata, or laciniate (or "semi-cactus lace"), characterised by flowers which petals are deeply laciniate or fringed along their length. Introduced around 1959, in the Netherlands, it is often attributed to the breeder Bruidegom.
The Dahlia 'Promise' forms a large, upright clump, reaching 1 m to 1.20 m in height and 60 to 80 cm in width, depending on conditions. Its flowers measure up to 18 cm in diameter, they are filled with lemon-yellow, finely divided petals. The foliage is deciduous, of a medium green, formed of leaves divided into 3 to 5 dentate segments. The sturdy stems help maintain the plant's structure and support the large inflorescences.  The flowering period extends from July to November, depending on climatic conditions, if faded flowers are regularly removed.

'Promise' integrates easily into mixed borders with other varieties of Dahlias in orange, white, red, and purple. In the garden or in cut flower arrangements, it can be paired with perennial blue Delphiniums, 'Green Jewel' apple-green coneflowers, sunflowers and panicles of Miscanthus. It will also be highlighted by a carpet of red or blue dwarf asters.

A star plant for borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias accompany the most beautiful flowers without hesitation, but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable to be consumed. But its poor gustatory qualities assigned it to the rank of ornamental plant. Since then, interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Promise' dahlias in fine weather in deeply worked soil enriched, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to fill in without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, pour a litre of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold. They need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry, so the tubercle can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems to 10 cm from the tubercle. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place.
