Description

The Shooting Star Triumph Tulip is a recently developed variety, still rare on the market, that captivates with the fragrance and cheerfulness of its enormous yellow flowers. Both voluptuous and sparkling, its flower carried by a sturdy stem makes a sensation, and its strong personality will be highlighted by light flowering in neutral tones, white or blue. In flower beds as well as in bouquets, Shooting Star is a flower that stands out and brings that essential touch of good mood.

The Shooting Star Tulip is a plant in the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, registered in the Netherlands in 2015, it is currently classified in the group of 'Triumph' tulips, whose main characteristic is to present flowers in the shape of a narrow cup, full of elegance. It will reach about 35cm (14in) in height when flowering, while showing good resistance to rain and wind. Perched on the stems, well above the broadly lanceolate green-blue leaves, the single flowers are very large, tapering at the opening, and slightly more open at full bloom. The colour of the petals is a pure and vibrant yellow, and the flowers have a noticeable fragrance. Flowering occurs in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

The Shooting Star tulip finds its place in large, well-drained flower beds, alongside plants with foliage (grasses, fennel, lady's mantle), Muscari and hyacinths, white-flowering tulips ('Calgary'), orange-flowering tulips ('Véronique Sanson') or mauve-flowering tulips ('Synaeda Amor'), narcissus such as 'Thalia' or 'Mount Hood'. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, even in pots and containers, consider it for your balconies and terraces. Ideal for creating elegant bouquets, use very little water in their vase, just a bottom is enough. Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. By mixing tulips, you can also create your own harmonies. Combine them with plants with foliage like lady's mantle or Tiarella, which will conceal the empty space left by their dry foliage in summer.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
