Description

The  Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Red Impression' is a remarkable variety with very large, thick, intense ruby red flowers with dark pink highlights. Belonging to a new line of earlier blooming Darwin hybrids, with more durable flowers, 'Red Impression' will naturalise easily, and faithfully bloom spring after spring on sturdy and weather-resistant stems. Imperial in borders, it is also an exceptional flower for bouquets.

'Red Impression' Darwin Hybrid Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, which is characterized by large single, oval flowers in the middle of the season, carried on long weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Red Impression' will reach 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) high when in bloom. The large flowers form perfect, elegant pyramids of intense red perched on sturdy stems, well above broadly lanceolate leaves. The outer petals are shaded with purple at the base and washed with ruby and pink tones. At full bloom, the corolla reaches 15 cm (6in) in diameter and reveals a blood-red interior surrounding a small black heart ringed with yellow. The colour is enhanced by the slightly waxy and translucent texture of the petals. It flowers in April-May, and each flower lives for several days before wilting.

The 'Red Impression' Tulip will fit well in large borders, and in bouquets. Its intense colour allows for combinations with white or pink tulips, creating a beautiful contrast. Pair it with lady's mantle, Corsican hellebores, and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will look beautiful on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, just a little water at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Red Impression' tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the seed head to avoid depleting the plant. However, the leaves should only be removed when they are completely yellowed and dried, as they allow the bulb to replenish its reserves and ensure its longevity.
