Description

The 'Ivory Floradale' Darwin Tulip, obtained in 1965 and awarded by the RHS in England, enchants springtime. Its very large flower is a delightful blend of ivory and light lemon yellow, sometimes marked with small lines of carmine red, on a long and sturdy stem. At maturity, the flower becomes almost entirely ivory, revealing a lemon-yellow interior. Darwin hybrid tulips are early with long-lasting flowers in magnificent colours. They are sculptural in flower beds and exceptional in bouquets.

The 'Ivory Floradale' Darwin hybrid tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, whose main characteristics are large single, ovoid flowers in mid-season, carried by long stems resistant to bad weather. Tulips of this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. Originally derived from cross-breeding with botanical species like T. fosteriana, they show no signs of their wild ancestry. 'Ivory Floradale' will reach a height of 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large elegant flowers are a classic shape, almost white, with more yellow on the edges of the petals. The colour is enhanced by the slightly waxy and translucent texture of the petals. The corolla opens to reveal a brighter yellow heart around a small white centre. It will flower in April, with each flower lasting several days before wilting.

The Ivory Floradale Tulip ffits well in large flower beds, and bouquets. Its softly acid colour allows for associations with white tulips or small yellow flowers that form a beautiful harmony. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores and euphorbias, for interesting compositions. It can also be planted in borders, rock gardens, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will look beautiful on balconies and terraces. It goes perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for elegant bouquets. In a vase, very little water at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Ivory Floradale' tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or semi-shady location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
