Collection items (3 plants)

Description

This collection of 3 Weigelas includes varieties with proven garden qualities. Between May and June, these shrubs are covered with crimson red, pink, or white bell-shaped flowers, depending on the plant. Whether planted in a large shrub bed or included in a flowering hedge, they create an enchanting display. All three have rapid growth, a rounded, shrubby habit, and easily reach 2.50 m (8ft) in all directions. They are easy to grow in any fresh, loose soil, even if it is chalky.

The collection includes:

1 Weigela florida 'Bristol Ruby': flowers in two shades of red, carmine red on the periphery, slightly deeper red in the centre. Abundant flowering in June, sporadic blooming until late summer.

1 Weigela florida 'Rosea': its bright pink buds open to reveal pale pink flowers. Unique and profuse flowering in late spring.

1 Weigela florida 'Candida': a variety with pure white flowers, recurrent flowering in summer.

Hardy down to -20 °C (1°F), Weigela thrives in sunny locations with deep, loose soil that doesn't dry out too much in summer. With its arching and vigorous habit, it is a highly ornamental shrub, from spring to autumn. Its late spring flowering brings interest to any hedge and adds character to the most modest of settings. Take into account its mature size when planting: space each plant 1.50 m (5ft) apart if planting in a bed, for example, or 1 m (1 or 3ft) apart if planting in a hedge. In a bed, consider pairing it with another Weigela with purple foliage 'Alexandra', Mock Orange, Lilac, or a guelder rose (Viburnum opulus). To compensate for the weigela's lack of foliage in winter, pair it with evergreen shrubs such as holly, boxwood, or mahonias, for example.

Planting and care

Hardy down to -20 °C (1°F), Weigela florida thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions. Plant it in ordinary, loose soil that is not too compact, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (chalky), from October to March (excluding periods of frost and heatwaves). It adapts well to many regions, but not in Mediterranean areas where summers are too hot and dry. To maintain a compact habit and promote flowering, prune back the branches that have borne spring flowers by 2/3, just after flowering.
