Description

Michelia yunnanensis 'Gail's Favourite', also known as Magnolia laevifolia Gail's Favourite, is an unfamiliar bush related to Magnolias, with modest dimensions and a slow growth rate. Its upright habit is compact and dense. It has beautiful evergreen foliage, which is dark green and glossy. In spring, it displays velvety, golden buds that open into large, cream, fragrant cup-shaped flowers adorned with prominent yellow stamens. This flowering is followed by decorative fruiting in pink pods filled with shiny purple seeds. A rare gem ideal for small gardens or in a large pot on a patio or balcony.

Michelia yunnanensis is a bush closely related to the Magnolia, native to China as its name suggests, and belongs to the Magnoliaceae family. Michelia yunnanensis 'Gail's Favourite', also known as Michelia laevifolia 'Gail's Favourite', is a small, dense and bushy tree with a loose crown and a pyramidal silhouette. It has evergreen foliage composed of ovate and rounded, glossy and leathery leaves in a beautiful dark green colour. The undersides of the leaves are velvety brown. Slow-growing, in our climate it reaches 2 to 2.5m (7 to 8ft) in height and 1 to 2m (3 to 7ft) in width. From April to May, its branches are adorned with velvety camel-coloured buds, which open into large cream corollas, magnified by a light-yellow prominent stamen heart, emitting a delicious lemon scent. The flowering is followed by decorative fruiting in the form of pink pods, opening to reveal shiny purple seeds.

'Gail's Favourite' is perfectly suited for small gardens. It can even be cultivated in a large container on a patio or balcony, with regular watering. In the garden, it can be placed alone on a lawn, but also planted in a group of bushes or at the back of a flower bed. It will also find its place in a flowering hedge. This species is easily shaped into topiary art. Combine 'Gail's Favourite' with perennial plants or bushes with white and yellow flowers to brighten up flower beds or hedges! It will be stunning when planted with a rhododendron, a Chinese azalea, a magellan fuchsia, a Japanese anemone, a hydrangea, a Korean forsythia, or a symphoricarpos.

Planting and care

It prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic (pH 6.5), organic-rich soils, which are moist but not waterlogged. It appreciates partially shaded exposures and dreads scorching exposures. It can be grown in the ground in regions with mild climates, as its hardiness does not exceed -12°C (10.4°F), even if it is planted in a very sheltered position. However, if the above-ground parts have been destroyed by frost, it may regrow from the stump, if well protected. Mulch the base to maintain moisture in hot climates, and water abundantly every 15 days in case of prolonged drought. This bush does not tolerate transplantation once established, so choose its location carefully. Its appearance and growth will be very different depending on whether it is planted in open ground or in a container, and whether it grows in shade or in a sunny exposure. When it develops in the shade, its habit is more open and flexible, with foliage darker. Conversely, if it is exposed to the sun, it will show a more compact habit, and denser foliage, which is smaller and lighter green. When grown in a large container, its growth is limited. Watering should then be regular in summer and greatly reduced in winter: in a cold greenhouse or conservatory, water (without too much limestone) should be applied only when the substrate is dry to a depth of 1cm (1in) on the surface. The bush can be easily pruned after flowering. In late winter, before the start of vegetation, remove dead wood and intertwined branches, keeping only vigorous branches to maintain a beautiful habit.

Care

Pruning instructions When fully grown, it does not really require pruning. It is sufficient to remove dead branches and trim back the shoots that unbalance its habit. Perform this work at the end of winter. However, for young plants and those planted in a hedge or trained as topiary, it will be necessary to carry out shearing pruning after flowering, in June, and a refreshment pruning in August. This operation aims to densify its foliage and keep it compact.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March, August
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
