Hydrangea Runaway Bride® 'Snow White' (USHYD0405)
The young plant arrived in very good condition. I waited a few days to plant it, and for the past ten days, it seems to be doing very well (the current weather in Belgium is taking care of watering it regularly). It's already flowering again.

Description
The Hydrangea 'Runaway Bride' is a brand new hybrid hydrangea awarded plant of the year 2018 at the Chelsea Flower Show! This variety, which comes from Japan, has a unique characteristic: the flowers not only bloom at the end of its branches, but also along the stems, at the axils of the leaves. They are white, often tinged with pink in neutral soil, and gathered in small flat and delicate inflorescences like lace. Adorned with garlands of flowers from summer to autumn, this surprising bush of modest stature, but vigorous and well-branched, is an excellent variety for a terrace or a small garden.
The Hydrangea 'Runaway Bride' (Snow White), whose exact hybrid origins have not yet been disclosed, belongs to the Hydrangea family. It is a hardy bush with a rounded bushy habit, approximately as wide as it is tall, about 1m (3 to 4 ft) in size. Its flowering extends continuously from July to October. It takes the form of small inflorescences in compound plates composed of a few tiny fertile florets shaped like buds surrounded by many much larger sterile florets with 4 beautifully serrated petals on the edge. They appear at the end of the branches, but also at each lateral bud present on these branches. In slightly acidic soil, they will take on a pink hue. The foliage turns yellow in autumn before falling off. In summer, the flowering is accompanied by dark green foliage: the leaves are opposite, small in size, simple, ovate to elliptical, ending in a tapered point and with toothed edges. This 'Runaway Bride' variety has a good lifespan.
Hydrangeas are sturdy and loyal plants that live and bloom for many years in the garden. These bushes are well known for brightening the north side of houses. The 'Runaway Bride' variety is a wonderful terrace and balcony plant that will thrive in flower beds. It truly deserves a prime location, near the house or close to the entrance. Even though these plants dislike limestone, hydrangeas are not strictly heathland plants, they can tolerate neutral soil. Pair them with magellanica fuchsias or the curious Fuchsia hatschbachii, a climbing species, with annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their magnificent flowers for a long time, in the garden or in bouquets at home.

Planting and care
Plant the Runaway Bride hydrangea in spring or early autumn, preferably in a semi-shaded position, for example against an east-facing or even north-facing wall. This variety tolerates a few hours of sun per day, in the morning. It does not necessarily require acidic soil, but it appreciates a deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, optionally enriched with a good fertiliser before planting. If your soil is dry, incorporate a quantity of well-rotted compost at planting to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, the Runaway Bride hydrangea is not afraid to be planted in cold regions.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
