Description

The 'Green Ever Belles' variety of Hydrangea macrophylla is a new and hardy plant that is easy to grow. It produces long-lasting green-toned flowers and is resistant to the sun. This variety has very dense and durable flower heads with clusters of thick-textured florets. You can plant this compact bush in the garden or a large pot with rich and non-limestone soil. The cut flowers of this plant remain decorative for a long time and are suitable for all styles and colours.

Hydrangeas belong to the Hydrangeaceae family, and their ancestors are native to China, Japan, and North America. Hydrangea macrophylla Green Ever Belles 'Hortmagreclo' has a rounded, regular habit, supported by thick, stiff, solid branches. It reaches maturity at about 1 metre (3 feet 4 inches) in all directions and can grow to 1.20 metres (3 feet 11 inches). This hydrangea has regular and long-lasting flowering, from July to September, on strong stems aged one to two years. It bears very dense flower heads in balls, measuring up to 20 centimetres (7.9 inches) in diameter. The inflorescences are composed of sterile florets in the shape of cups with dentate edges. The florets are tender green at first and then become white in the centre, broadly bordered with bright green, before turning into a more sustained green colour. These florets do not burn in the sun or brown in the shade. Even when faded and dry, its flower heads remain attractive in winter, especially when covered with frost. The flowering is spread over healthy-looking foliage, which is dark green and matte. The leaves are opposite, ovate to elliptical, and end in a pointed tip with a roughly saw-toothed edge. From October, the foliage turns yellow before falling. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

Hydrangea 'Green Ever Belles' is an exceptional plant to be enjoyed not far from the house or in a large pot on a shaded terrace during the hottest hours. It is perfect for a border or a curve in a path, in gardens of all sizes. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This variety tolerates the sun well and can be exposed to the east. This variety will bring splendour and lushness to slightly dark areas or close to a somewhat hidden entrance. Even though hydrangeas are not fond of limestone, they are not strictly speaking ericaceous plants and thrive in any good, non or slightly limestone garden soil, improved with potting soil. Pair them with magellanica fuchsialilies, or plant spring flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous and long-lasting flowers in the garden or the house.

Planting and care

To plant the hydrangea macrophylla 'Green Ever Belles' choose a slightly shaded spot in spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing or northern wall. Keep it away from cold winds and the sun. It prefers deep, fresh, well-drained, and relatively fertile soil, but ericaceous soil is unnecessary. You can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from the base and add well-rotted compost to improve soil freshness. This plant is resilient and can be planted in cold areas. When pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first or second bud. To encourage the formation of young shoots, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. Prune every year in March or April.
