Description
Euonymus japonicus Himalaya® 'Lankveld06' is a Japanese spindle tree distinguished by its spectacular white young shoots. Compact and well-branched and evergreen in winter, it boasts a neat silhouette, and its growth is easy to manage. Taller and more vigorous than Paloma Blanca®, it can be used for low hedges and in shrub borders, or in containers on the terrace.
This spindle belongs to the Celastraceae family. The botanical species Euonymus japonicus is native to the coasts and forest edges of Japan, South Korea and some neighbouring islands in East Asia. It is a shrub that tolerates pruning very well.
Himalaya® is a selection obtained by the Dutch nursery Van Lankveld and protected under the cultivar name 'Lankveld06' (PBR). This selection features particularly white and elongated spring shoots. The habit of this shrub is bushy, dense and upright from the base. Its growth is slow to medium, around 10 to 20 cm per year, depending on conditions. In open ground, the plant reaches 1.20 m to 1.50 m in height with a spread of 0.80 m to 1 m after about ten years, slightly less in a pot. The leaves are opposite on the stems, ovate to elliptical, and finely serrated on the edges. The young shoots are almost entirely creamy white in spring, then they turn green while retaining a light margin. They are leathery and glossy, measuring 2 to 4 cm long. The luminous effect is at its maximum from April to June, but the foliage remains decorative all year round. The insignificant flowering occurs from May to July in the form of small greenish flowers with four petals, gathered in inflorescences that are hardly visible in the foliage. When the branches are not pruned after flowering, the shrub will produce small pink to orange capsules containing seeds surrounded by a red aril, decorative but toxic.
This variety is hardy down to –15 °C in well-drained soil. It tolerates wind and sea spray, prefers gentle sun or partial shade and a moist to not too dry soil.
In the garden, this Himalaya® Japanese spindle tree can be planted as a low hedge or in small groups to mark the boundaries of the house. Spaced 60 to 80 cm apart, it forms a very elegant evergreen screen that a light pruning at the end of summer is enough to maintain. In a border, it brings light near darker shrubs. It is well-suited to town gardens, white gardens or contemporary settings. In a large container, it tolerates pruning and spaced-out repotting well. It can be paired with the heavenly bamboo Nandina domestica 'Twilight', the spikes of Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head', the winter flowers of Hellebore HGC Ice n’ Roses 'Mary Marble' and a few clumps of Euonymus japonicus 'Kathy' for a play of variegated foliage.

Plant Euonymus japonicus Himalaya in spring in any well-drained soil in a gently sunny or lightly shaded position. It prefers deep, humus-rich soils that remain moist and tolerates the presence of lime in the soil well. It does not tolerate severe frosts and is hardy down to approximately -12/-14°C. Excessively hot and dry summer climates are not very suitable for this evergreen spindle, as it risks becoming infested with mealybugs and sooty mould.
Feed twice a year, in early spring and autumn. In case of drought, water to maintain beautiful foliage. If the plant is grown in a pot, change the growing substrate once a year in spring. Shelter your potted plant if severe frosts are forecast (<-8°C).

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
