I received it in November, in flower. It's the 1st of April, it's still in bloom, magnificent. I'm delighted!

Description

Compact bush with autumn flowering, Camellia sasanqua Yume is an original variety with small bicoloured flowers, white on the edges and pink in the center.

Appreciated for its long flowering period, this variety blooms from October and produces abundant flowers until January. It forms a compact 1m (3 ft) tall and 1.20m (4 ft) wide bush and produces single flowers, approximately 4-5cm in diameter, white on the edges of the petals and deep pink in the center.

The elliptical leaves of the camellia are dark green, measuring 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -12°C, this variety thrives in partial shade, protected from cold winds. It prefers acidic, humus-rich, moist, and light soils.

Plant Camellia sasanqua Yume in an ericaceous bed alongside azaleas, skimmia, Pieris, and heathers. Its compact size allows for container cultivation: place it on a partially shaded terrace and bring the pot indoors as soon as the cold sets in, to enjoy the flowers for longer.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua can be grown in a fairly shady site sheltered from cold and drying winds. You can grow it in full sun but the roots must remain cool. Plant in a cool, humus-rich, acidic and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping flower buds.
