Description

Buxus Renaissance is a recent hybrid boxwood, selected for its very low habitexceptional density and resistance to major boxwood diseases. Its fine, deep green foliage creates impeccable borders and French parterre patterns, attractive even in winter. Naturally compact, it lends itself to precise pruning and retains a neat shape with minimum maintenance. Suitable for full sun to partial shade, it thrives in all well-drained soils, including slightly chalky ones.

Buxus BetterBuxus/Better Boxwood Renaissance (family Buxaceae, cultivar Buxus ‘HER2009B01’) is a hybrid developed in Belgium as part of the BetterBuxus® programme, aiming to offer healthier and more reliable boxwood for the garden. It belongs to a series of four complementary cultivars (Renaissance, Heritage, Babylon Beauty, Skylight) differentiated by their habit; Renaissance is the lowest and tightest.
The cultivar Renaissance has a particularly compact, bushy habit, rounded and broader than tall, finer foliage and better tolerance to boxwood diseases. An evergreen shrub, it bears opposite, simple, obovate to elliptical, entire, smooth and glossy, small (most often 1.5–2.5 cm long by 0.8–1.2 cm wide) leaves, of a clear to dark green, lighter at bud burst. Its regular growth is slow to moderate. In the ground, its mature size is generally around 40–60 cm tall by 60–90 cm wide (it becomes wider if not pruned). In a container, depending on pot size and pruning frequency, expect roughly 20–30 cm tall by 30–50 cm wide at 3–4 years old. Hardy to -25°C.

As a low hedge or knot garden, Renaissance creates very crisp lines and has a fine texture. This boxwood is perfect for highlighting a path or outlining French-style parterre patterns. Allow it to form regular cushions in square planters or clip it into continuous ribbons around a central motif. To vary without breaking the style, pair it with the dark, very regular cushions of Taxus × media ‘Densiformis’. Add Lonicera nitida ‘Maigrün’, easy-going and fast-growing, and edge your bed with Teucrium chamaedrys. This 'Renaissance' boxwood will also be perfect for elegantly framing your beds of large-flowered bush roses.
