Description
Solanum rantonetti is a bushy shrub that is covered in a multitude of small round blue-violet flowers in the summer, which continue to bloom until the first frost. It is called Blue Potato Bush because of the intense colour of its flowers.
Originally from South America, Solanum rantonetii is a frost-sensitive bushy shrub with flexible branches that often trail. When mature, it forms a bush that is 2m (7ft) tall and 1.50m (5ft) wide.
From early summer, it produces flowers that are approximately 3cm (1in) in diameter, round, trumpet-shaped, and blue-violet with a yellow centre. Known for its abundant flowering, Solanum rantonetti continues to bloom throughout the summer, only stopping in late autumn, often due to frost.
The foliage is typically oval, with undulating edges and a tender green colour. It is evergreen but may become deciduous if exposed to frost.
Like Lantanas, Jasmines, and Citrus trees, Solanum rantonetti is frost-sensitive and hardy, up to -5°C (23°F), making it well-suited for milder climates. When grown in colder climates, it should be grown exclusively in pots and overwintered in a frost-free location.
This fast-growing Tree Gentian thrives in warm and sunny exposures, as well as rich, moist, and well-draining soils. As a nutrient-demanding plant, it benefits from the application of a slow-release fertiliser high in potassium at the beginning of the season.

Planting and care
If you want to grow Solanum rantonetti, you can plant it in open ground or pots, but it needs lots of sun. If you plant it in open ground, wait until the strong frosts have passed because it can only handle a bit of frost. It will grow better if you pre-cultivate it in pots in a warm and bright place. When you plant your Solanums, make sure they're in the sun. They like dry soil, organic fertiliser when you plant them, and regular fertiliser as they grow. If you plant them in pots, water them and feed them frequently. Solanums grow quickly, so you need to support them with a trellis or wire that's big enough. You can also plant them as ground cover.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
