Description
Bush rose Clivia® is a compact floribunda rose that produces clusters of very double flowers, in a deep pink suffused with mauve, from summer to autumn. The tapered flower buds open into full cups that release a delicate fragrance. Their colour fades very little in the sun. Its particularly healthy foliage and moderate growth make it suitable for many uses.
This rose belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a deciduous shrub whose leaves fall in autumn. Like other modern garden roses, it is a complex horticultural hybrid. Clivia® was bred in Germany by W. Kordes’ Söhne and introduced in 2025. It belongs to the group of cluster-flowered bush roses, also known as floribundas. In 2026, it received the honorary award from the German Rose Society at the international new rose competition in Baden-Baden, a distinction awarded for its original colour.
The bush grows upright, while branching sufficiently to maintain a dense habit. At maturity, it reaches 70 cm in height and 50 cm in spread. Its foliage, made up of toothed leaflets in dark green, remains attractive throughout the season. It shows very good resistance to powdery mildew and black spot, as well as even greater resistance to rust. The elongated flower buds, in a darker pink, stand out clearly against the foliage. Within the same cluster, barely opened flowers appear alongside more fully open cups measuring 6 to 7 cm in diameter. Very double, they open into rounded cups; their bright pink petals take on mauve hues and become slightly paler towards the outside. Flowering begins in June and returns in waves until October if faded clusters are removed. This variety also stands out for its good performance in strong sunlight. Its excellent hardiness (–20 °C) and robust foliage allow it to be grown in many regions.
In a sunny border or at the front of a large shrub border, this Clivia® variety is best planted in groups of three or five to form a regular flowering mass. It can be paired with dwarf rose Bordure Blanche®, for its small white rosettes that brighten its deep pink colour, or with rose Nautica, of similar stature, with paler lavender-pink flowers. Between the roses, Balkan clary ‘Schneehügel’ produces its white spikes, while Geranium ‘Rozanne’ combines its blue flowers with summer-long repeat flowering. All these plants enjoy sun and well-drained soil that does not dry out excessively in summer. In a container, this compact rose is self-sufficient in a wide, deep pot.

Planting and care
Plant floribunda rose 'Clivia' from November to March in ordinary, well-loosened, well-drained soil. Roses favour clay soils, preferably heavy rather than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compacted or too dry in summer, it is best to incorporate compost, well-rotted manure or compost into the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soil in winter. Plant it in a sunny position, or partial shade if necessary. Roses are hungry plants, so applying a specialist fertiliser will benefit them at the start of growth and regularly throughout the flowering period. To encourage repeat flowering, remove faded flowers regularly.
Roses are often covered in spots or look poor at the end of summer, but this does not affect their development. These spots are not dangerous to the rose; they are a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice to remedy the problem and read our article: Help! My roses have spots

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
