Description

Sempervivum 'Steel Appeal' belongs to the Chick Charms® Giants collection, renowned for its large houseleeks with plenty of character. This variety forms broad, domed rosettes that can reach 30 cm in diameter, with thick, dark red leaves edged in steel grey. Its evergreen foliage creates striking patterns all year round, both in the ground and in pots. A perennial that is hardy and drought-resistant, this succulent plant only fears excess stagnant moisture.

The houseleek, or Sempervivum Chick Charms® Giants 'Steel Appeal', belongs to the Crassulaceae family. This cultivar resulted from horticultural selection within the Chick Charms® Giants series. Sempervivum × hybrida is a complex hybrid comprising several species originating from central and southern Europe (the Alps, Pyrenees and Balkans), which grow naturally in poor, rocky and well-drained soils at altitudes of up to 2,500 m. This perennial plant forms evergreen rosettes with decorative foliage all year round.
The habit of 'Steel Appeal' is compact and mat-forming: its mature height varies between 8 and 15 cm, and its spread reaches up to 30 cm per rosette. It regularly produces lateral offsets connected by stolons, forming a dense colony over the seasons. Growth is moderate in spring and summer, but fast enough to fill a 4-litre pot in one to two seasons. As with most houseleeks, each rosette is monocarpic: it flowers only once, in summer (July-August), before drying out. The flowering stem is branched and bears small pinkish to reddish stars. The fleshy, pointed leaves remain evergreen in winter. Their base is garnet red, while their broad margin is a contrasting steel grey.

In a rock garden, on a dry-stone wall or in a large bowl on the terrace, Sempervivum 'Steel Appeal' stands out with its large, metallic-coloured rosettes. It combines perfectly with other hardy succulent plants such as creeping or mat-forming stonecrops, hardy Delosperma or Orostachys boehmeri, as well as with mat-forming thymes to create contrasts in texture. In a dry garden or a mineral setting, it remains decorative all year round without any maintenance. Houseleeks can also be incorporated into a gravel garden alongside undemanding plants such as dwarf irises.

Planting and care

Sempervivum Chick Charms Giants Steel Appeal prefers sunny to partially shaded positions and perfectly well-drained, moist to dry, poor soils that do not retain water. Plant it in spring or autumn, in the ground or in a container, adding gravel or coarse sand to the planting medium. Conversely, if you place it in a rockery or on a wall, give it just a little potting compost to help it establish. Thereafter, it will look after itself.

To propagate it, simply cut off a few young rosettes and replant them elsewhere, barely covering the roots. Care for it by ensuring that it is not overwhelmed by taller plants, covered with fallen leaves or plant debris, and by removing the small spent flower heads if necessary.
