Beautiful. Very satisfied. They are in flower now, earlier than I expected. Dry soil, east-facing, with a harsher winter than in previous years.

Description

The Penstemon eatonii, also known as Eaton's Penstemon, is a graceful, tall, and glossy plant, stunning in large rock gardens and well-drained flower beds. The plant offers a long and spectacular scarlet red flowering period from late spring to summer. Its long tubular flowers on tall stems catch the eye from a distance. It pairs perfectly with perennials and dry soil grasses.

The Penstemon eatonii is an herbaceous perennial from the Plantaginaceae family. This botanical species is native to the western United States, from California to the Rocky Mountains. This plant can be found in various desert, woodland, forested, or sparsely vegetated plateau habitats. In California, it is mainly found in high-altitude desert areas. This penstemon forms a semi-evergreen basal clump consisting of lanceolate to ovate, non-dentate leaves with a medium green colour, measuring up to 9 centimetres long. Flowering occurs from May to August. Floral stems emerge from the foliage, reaching up to 1 metre in height. The slightly open tubular bell-shaped flowers, measuring 2 to 3 cm long, are arranged in small clusters along the stem. They display a bright, vibrant hue called "fire engine red." Numerous seeds are dispersed after flowering. This plant has a deep root system, which can make transplantation challenging but allows it to find some coolness at depth. This Eaton's penstemon stump can withstand temperatures as low as -10 °C in well-drained soil.

The Penstemon eatonii is well-suited to our dry regions in summer and winter but not excessively cold areas. It can be planted in raised flower beds with excellent drainage or in rock gardens in favourable climates. Beautiful scenes can be created by combining them with bushy salvias, baptisias, toadflaxes, and dry soil grasses like Stipa pulcherrima, Eragrostis, or Muhlenbergia capillaris. Sow some love-in-a-mist and California poppies to add some spice. When planted in autumn, it will have time to establish its roots deeply and withstand the summer without damage.

Planting and care

Penstemon eatonii is a plant in a mountainous desert climate: it tolerates drought well and fears long, wet, and cold winters. Its hardiness is average, down to -10°C for short periods in very well-drained, rocky, stony, or sandy soil. In clayey soil, it is useful to mix coarse river sand or gravel with the planting soil and to plant in a raised bed or a large rock garden. Once well rooted, this penstemon can do without watering in summer.

To successfully grow botanical penstemons, the nature of the soil is crucial, as is the climate. They require very well-drained soil, preferably dry in winter. In excessively wet soils, they rot quickly. In overly-rich soils, they do not live long. In cool climates, place the plants in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from cold winds (south or west exposure). In hot climates, choose a cooler and semi-shaded exposure. In very cold and humid regions, it is advisable to take stem cuttings in autumn. It does not suffer from specific diseases.

This plant requires only minimal maintenance, but when you remove the faded flowers in autumn, slightly shorten the flowerless stems without cutting them down to the ground, especially in regions where winter is humid. Indeed, the foliage plays a vital role in moisture regulation. Wait until spring is well established (March-April) to shorten the branches whose foliage has been damaged by the cold. If summer is dry, water regularly to support flowering. Cover the stump with glass or a frame to protect it from severe cold in the coldest regions. Divide your penstemons every three or four years to rejuvenate them, and wait until spring to perform this operation.

Care

Pruning instructions When you remove the spent flowers in autumn, shorten the spent stems slightly without pulling them down to the ground, especially in regions with wet winters. Foliage plays a vital role in regulating humidity. Wait until spring is well established (March-April) before cutting back branches whose foliage has been damaged by the cold. Regularly remove wilted flowers.
