Description

Bushy variety with summer flowering, the Penstemon 'Midnight' produces magnificent flowers of pure violet colour with a light violet throat striped with dark violet.

Semi-evergreen and semi-persistent, the Penstemon 'Midnight' forms a bushy clump 60-80cm (24-32in) tall and as wide. It produces in early summer elongated bell-shaped flowers of pure violet colour with a light violet throat striped with dark violet, arranged on erect spikes. The flowering lasts 3 months, provided that the faded stems are regularly removed.

Its narrow, apple-green leaves, 9 cm (4in) long, are evergreen in warmer climates but become deciduous in cold regions.

This perennial is quite hardy and easy to grow. It will thrive in the sun in well-drained soil.

Planting and care

Planting it in fresh and well-drained soil in a sunny position is essential. If you live in the south, it is advisable to give it partial shade to protect it from the sun. Adding sand to the planting soil will provide the right conditions for the plant to grow, as penstemon is sensitive to excessive winter moisture associated with freezing temperatures. To extend the flowering period, cut back the faded stems. However, penstemons do not tolerate cold winters well, so mulching them to a height of 20-25cm (8-10in) is recommended. Prune the plants to 25-30cm (10-12in) from the ground at the end of winter, but not before. This will help the plant thrive.

Care

Pruning instructions Once frosts are no longer a threat, the base should be cleaned in early spring by pruning back to 20 cm. This will encourage branching and flowering. During flowering, dead flowers should be removed as and when they appear by cutting off the flower spikes in the axils of new shoots (between the stem and the leaves), inducing a second wave of flowers and keeping the plant vigorous and compact.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
