Description
The Ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket' is an impressive and majestic ornamental plant, with a giant-like appearance. Its spectacular dark green and ebony decorative foliage is dominated, from summer to autumn, by long spikes of golden yellow flowers, grouped in pyramid-shaped clusters, on dark purple-black stems. This robust perennial plant with large growth prefers coolness, shade, and humidity. The Ligularia is a structuring and luxuriant plant, with a striking effect in shaded and humid areas of the garden !
The 'The Rocket' Ligularia, also known as Shavalski Ligularia, is a horticultural perennial belonging to the asteraceae family. It is a hybrid resulting from cross-breeding between Ligularia stenocephala and Ligularia przewalskii. This vigorous variety forms a dense and compact clump, with very large deciduous leaves, sometimes deeply lobed, triangular or heart-shaped, pointed, leathery, and toothed, measuring between 15 to 35 cm (6 to 14in) long. The upper side of the leaves is dark green and the underside is ebony in colour. From June to September, or even until the first frost, long purple-black stems rise above the foliage, bearing large slender clusters composed of numerous golden yellow flowers, slightly fragrant, measuring 2 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. The flowering of this Ligularia attracts many pollinating insects. This cultivar measures 1.80 m (6ft) tall by 1 m (3ft) wide.
This cultivar received the Award of Garden Merit awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993.
With great longevity, vigorous and highly cold-resistant, this 'The Rocket' Ligularia thrives in moist, even clayey soils, partial shade, or even complete shade. Forming an imposing, dense, and compact mass, 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) in diameter, outside of flowering, its magnificent foliage will make a sensation in the garden. This beautiful ornamental plant is particularly suitable for water's edge borders (pond, ditch, basin, stream ). It is also ideally placed in flower beds or mixed borders, tolerating even a relatively sunny situation, as long as the soil remains moist and cool, a necessary condition for the development of its generous foliage. Slow to establish, it takes two to three years for this Ligularia to reach its adult size. It is the perfect companion for many shade-loving perennial plants and waterside plants such as Campanulate lactiflora, Hosta, Rodgersia, Kirengeshoma, Astilbe, Pigamon, Perennial Sunflower, Siberian Veronica, Marsh Spurge, or Iris chrysographes. It also works wonders when placed in a large container, while remaining vigilant about the constant moisture of its substrate.

Planting and care
The Ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket' is a vigorous and resistant plant, extremely hardy, able to withstand temperatures well below -20°C (1°F). Having significant water requirements, its substrate should remain constantly moist, but not waterlogged. It should be planted in spring or autumn, in a humus-bearing, loose, deep and moist soil, or in a heavy and clayey soil. It prefers semi-shaded or complete shade situations, but can tolerate occasional sunny exposure as long as the soil remains cool and moist. Direct sunlight and drought cause its foliage to wilt and its flowers to wither. This is a sign that generous watering is needed. It is advisable to mulch the base with organic compost to maintain freshness in summer. It is recommended to place it sheltered from strong winds that can bend its flowering stems and damage its foliage. Staking of the floral stems can be done to support them during flowering. A very easy plant, its maintenance is limited to removing damaged leaves and cutting back faded stems. In spring, a compost application will be beneficial for abundant flowering. Clean the clump at the end of winter. As it establishes slowly, it is recommended to leave the Ligularia in place for a long time. Multiplication can be done by dividing clumps in spring or autumn. However, not suffering from any diseases, its young foliage, is a feast for snails and slugs. Monitor the emergence of young leaves to prevent any gastropod invasion.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
