Description

Louisa's Song is a spectacular tall bearded iris. Its large, highly ruffled flowers combine a bright mauve-lavender with a deeper purplish violet on the sepals. The tangerine beard highlights the heart of the flower well. This variety has a strong presence in an iris border but remains easy to pair with white, blues, and pinks.

This cultivar ‘Louisa’s Song’ belongs to the group of tall bearded irises, also called large bearded iris. This perennial grows from fleshy, horizontal rhizomes, barely buried. These produce elongated, upright, sword-shaped, glaucous green leaves. Depending on the severity of winter, this foliage may partially or completely disappear. In flower, the plant reaches about 1.07m in height. Its stems branch above the foliage; on a well-established plant, they often carry 3 to 4 branches and up to 8 buds, which extends the flowering period. The variety is early or mid-season; it flowers in May under an average climate. The flowers are large and heavily ruffled, with curled edges that add volume to the corolla. The 3 upright petals are mauve-lavender with an orchid tint. The 3 trailing sepals take on a deeper purplish violet shade, with a lighter edge that highlights their ruffles. The clearly visible, tangerine beard warms the centre of the flower. The scent is light and sweet.

'Louisa’s Song’ was registered in 1999 by Australian breeder Barry Blyth. Its seedling number is E148-1. It comes from the cross ‘Cloud Berry’ × ‘About Town’ and was introduced by Tempo Two in 1999-2000.

Plant Iris ‘Louisa’s Song’ in an iris border or a scree garden. Its rhizomes can be planted in groups of 3 to form a beautiful clump within 3 years. You can pair it with Iris germanica ‘Immortality’, pure white, and Iris germanica ‘Blue Sapphire’ to introduce a crystal silver-blue. A few bulbs of Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ can be planted between the iris clumps. The meadow sage Salvia pratensis ‘Twilight Serenade’, which takes over in summer, can be placed away from the rhizomes.

Planting and care

Plant Iris ‘Louisa's Song’ from July to October. Choose a very sunny spot, with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, as shade significantly reduces flowering. Plant it in fertile, neutral to alkaline soil, especially well-drained; in clay soil, loosen widely and add gravel or coarse sand to avoid standing water around the rhizome. Position the rhizome almost at the surface, with the upper side visible to the sun, and bury only the roots. Space the young plants 30 to 40cm apart. Water at planting time, then only in case of prolonged drought during the first year. Remove faded flowers, cut the spent flower stalks at the base, and remove dry leaves at the end of winter.
Divide the rhizomes every three or four years, in summer, when the centre of the clump flowers less.
