Description

Hosta Sun Mouse is an adorable miniature variety with thick golden foliage that is slightly undulate and almost round. Its glossy and veined leaves, ranging from golden yellow to lime green, maintain their vibrant colour throughout the summer. This perennial plant of modest size is vigorous and sturdy, and grows into a dense and well-groomed mound, adorned with lavender flower spikes in the summer. It can help form beautiful borders or even a bright ground cover when planted en masse in partial shade. Plant it in a position with morning sun to preserve its beautiful colour. It also thrives in pots.

Hosta Sun Mouse is one of the latest additions to the 'Mouse' series, led by the famous 'Blue Mouse Ears'. It is a deciduous perennial plant of the asparagaceae family. This variety displays circular tufts of vegetation, almost carpet-like, with symmetrical growth from spring onwards. The plant reaches a height of 10 to 20cm (4 to 8in) for the foliage and spreads over 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in). Its longevity is excellent. It features small heart-shaped leaves with smooth and thick lamina, slightly undulated at the edges. Well-proportioned flower spikes emerge through the foliage and bear relatively large bell-shaped flowers compared to the plant in July-August. They are pale lavender and held in fairly compact clusters. This perennial spreads through stolons, similar to strawberries.

Hosta Sun Mouse pairs well with small ferns, Liriope Super Blue, and purple Heucheras in partial shade, as well as 'Astilbe chinensis Pumila' along the water's edge. This dwarf hosta also thrives in borders, moist rockeries, alongside columbines or small violets. All hostas grow well in pots and can remain in the same container for several years. Choose a special geranium potting soil to use during the growing season. As long as the foliage is not too dense, you can water from the top of the pot. Then place a saucer under the pot where you will pour the water, keeping the level constant in summer.

Planting and care

Hostas are planted in spring or autumn. They like a deep, fertile, humus-rich, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or dappled shade and in a sheltered location away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with the crumbled soil, partially backfill the hole and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Adding a slow-release fertiliser (bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firm the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also water regularly during dry weather in summer.

With their common preference for moist locations, slugs and snails never stray far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appealing to slugs, these plants still need protection from gastropods. Protect your Hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based pellets (approved for Organic Agriculture), eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods, as unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil or attack the lush green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repulsive odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
