Perfect and fast delivery; the only downside is the size of the young plants, the leaves are almost invisible (1 to 3mm (0in)) and in some buckets, they cannot be seen. I am convinced that with the good weather and the Breton watering, they will grow quickly, so now I give 3 stars, but I am ready to add more stars if the plants develop well: I remain in anticipation!

Description

Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila' is a vigorous perennial with a long flowering period. From July onwards, its light purple-pink flowers gathered in upright and well-formed panicles brighten up the surroundings of water features, shade gardens, and wet areas in the garden. It also performs well in large containers kept moist on the terrace. Its feathery panicles remain attractive as cut flowers or in dried bouquets. The foliage takes on lovely shades in autumn.

Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila', also known as false spirea, is a dwarf rhizomatous perennial plant with a compact habit with dense and regular clumps of deciduous compound foliage with toothed leaflets, forming a beautiful ground cover from spring. It reaches 30 cm (12in) high when in flower and spreads over 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in). It is a long-lived plant belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. The wild species from which this horticultural variety originates is native to the islands of the Japanese archipelago.

Plant Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila' in moist to damp, rich, neutral to acidic soil. It is a good choice for difficult-to-plant, heavy soil. This hybrid does not tolerate drought but is well-suited to clay soils if they are healthy and fertile. Note that Astilbes do not tolerate being flooded in winter. Plant Astilbe in partial shade or a non-scorching sunny location. In the wild, these plants grow in moist understories. Daily watering will be necessary in hot summers.

Chinese Astilbe can easily be grown in pots or troughs, flower beds and borders and used for cut flowers and dried flowers. In woodland, they can be used as low screening hedges. Combine them with Hostas, Ferns (Athyrium filix-femina), Arums, Kaffir Lilies (Schizostylis coccinea) and Meadowsweet (Filipendula) or other perennials for wet soils.

Planting and care

Astilbe chinensis Pumila mainly thrives in partial shade. You can plant it in gentle sunlight but avoid the hot midday hours. It is a trouble-free plant. Plant it in spring or autumn in cool, moist, well-drained, fertile soil, rich in organic matter. You can plant it in a marshy area. Do not plant it in limestone soil as it is sensitive to drying out. To plant your astilbe, work your soil to a depth of 20 cm (8in), breaking it up well, and add a base fertiliser such as bonemeal. Remove your plant from its pot and position the top of the root ball under 3 cm (1in) of soil. Then fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Astilbes require very little maintenance, just keep the soil moist and add compost and/or fertiliser in spring. In winter you may need to protect the flowers and young foliage, as they can be damaged by spring frosts. Avoid digging near these plants, as the roots develop near the surface. These plants are disease-resistant and rarely attacked by insects. While slugs ignore them, they can be prone to powdery mildew and fungal spots.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune the faded flowers to promote better foliage growth. The floral stems can be left in place to decorate the garden during the winter season, simply remove them the following spring by cutting them back to 10 cm (4in). It is important to avoid digging near these plants, as the rootstocks develop near the surface. These flowers are disease-resistant and rarely attacked by insects. While slugs ignore them, they may be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
