Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Lavender Deal' is undoubtedly one of the prettiest. It stands out from afar with its large triangular flowers, almost exotic, of a relatively exceptional deep lavender pink, washed with a clear blue reflection. Its chartreuse yellow throat, intense, extends into fine white filaments to the end of its petals. Not content with being beautiful, its flower is also fragrant. Very floriferous and robust, this tall perennial is a must-have that one expects from it. Invite it into your garden!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Lavender Deal' grows rapidly, in a dense clump that reaches 60 cm (24in) in height, with a relative spread of 60 cm (24in); Hemerocallis tend to spread a bit when they like the soil. The immense and wide-open flowers measure about 18 cm (7in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are thick and triangular, in a texture that reflects light very well. Each flower lasts only a day, but the flowering repeats continuously over a beautiful period between June and July. The foliage is linear and abundant and is semi-evergreen. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in shade and sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any environment. Still, due to a lack of modesty, it has a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside Hemerocallis. 'Lavender Deal' will perfectly integrate into the decor of a romantic garden, with bellflowers, penstemons, perennial flaxes, lemon yellow hemerocallis or phlox by its side. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided, choosing from dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they enhance salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Lavender Deal' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
