Description of Leontopodium alpinum - Edelweiss

The Edelweiss, a flower symbol of the Alps with its nickname of "snow star", is a perennial today rare and protected in its natural habitat. It is easy to cultivate if planted in full sun in a very well-drained soil.

Memories of our childhood in the Alps - we used to pick wild Edelweiss in the meadows of the high plateaus of Vercors - we rediscovered this beautiful perennial in its horticultural forms a few years ago. It has adapted very well in pots in the cooler climates.

Its woolly-textured flowers, in spring and early summer, measuring 3 cm (1in), can dry on the stem and remain decorative until autumn. It can also be used in small dried bouquets. The foliage is often deciduous in the mountains and semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild climates.

Plant it in rockeries or pots. It will be noticed!

Planting of Leontopodium alpinum - Edelweiss

Plant your Leontopodiums in a sunny position, in neutral or limestone soil, even stony, but with excellent drainage: the only true enemy of the edelweiss is excess moisture, especially in winter. Add a good amount of gravel or coarse sand to your soil to improve drainage. In rock gardens, water sparingly. In pots, water regularly but not excessively during the growing season, as it needs some moisture. In autumn, place your pots in a sheltered location from rain (under an awning, for example).
