Description
The Echinacea purpurea 'Green Jewel' is a variety of purple coneflower that surprises with its large, entirely green flower heads: apple-green ray florets surround a central cone in a deeper green. Their fresh colour, unusual among coneflowers, is accompanied by a light fragrance, and gradually fades over the hours. This perennial blooms all summer long on sturdy stems that do not flop over in rain and wind. It adds great charm to sunny borders and cut flower arrangements.
This coneflower belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a herbaceous perennial: its leafy stems die back in autumn, and the crown then produces new shoots in spring. Wild Echinacea purpurea grows naturally in the central and eastern United States, particularly in rocky prairies, woodland edges, savannas, and open woods. 'Green Jewel' originated from a spontaneous seedling spotted by Piet Oudolf in his nursery in Hummelo, the Netherlands, in 2004, among his purple coneflower plants. It was subsequently propagated vegetatively and distributed by Future Plants. In 2020, this selection received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. The plant develops a compact crown with fine, branching roots. Its pubescent stems branch from the base, forming a narrow clump 60 to 70 cm tall and 35 to 45 cm wide. The ovate to lanceolate leaves have an irregularly toothed margin and a rough surface, coloured dark green. The foliage first forms a low clump, then the branched flower stems rise in early summer. The flower heads are born at the top of the stems and their upper branches, spreading the flowering across the whole plant. The outer ray florets, almost horizontal, resemble petals arranged in one or two rows; their slightly notched tips give the flower's edge a finely cut appearance. Flowering extends from late June to September; the stems bear "flowers" of 10 cm in diameter. What is taken for a flower is in fact an inflorescence in the form of a head: the peripheral florets, shaped like short petals, surround numerous tubular florets gathered on a cone. Each head remains decorative for several weeks and provides nectar and pollen for pollinating insects. Very hardy in well-drained soil (-20°C), the plant flowers for longer in soil that retains some moisture in summer.
In a sunny border, plant it in groups of three or five, among medium-sized perennials. The Echinacea 'Fatal Attraction', of similar stature, bears purplish-pink flower heads and dark stems that highlight the light green of 'Green Jewel'. You can also add a few clumps of Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna', Agastache 'Blue Fortune' and Sedum 'Matrona', all suited to sun and well-drained soil. Their violet, lavender-blue, and pale pink flowers create a cool colour palette, punctuated by the purple foliage of the sedum. This coneflower is also suitable for a large pot, and its sturdy stems provide excellent cut flowers.

Planting and care
Plant the Green Jewel coneflower from March to May or September to October, in full sun, in soil that has been loosened deeply. Adding well-rotted compost improves poor or very free-draining soils. Winter drainage is essential: in clay soil, the root ball is best placed on a slight mound rather than on a layer of gravel confined to the bottom of the hole. The soil may be lime-bearing, but it must retain some moisture during flowering. Regular watering in the first season encourages deep rooting. Thereafter, a generous but infrequent watering during a dry spell is enough to sustain flowering. Division is carried out in spring, only when the clump loses its vigour. Sowing does not reliably preserve the green colour of the cultivar.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
