Description

Delphinium 'Magic Fountain Dark Blue/Black Bee' is a smaller perennial variety with magnificent inflorescences in summer, tightly packed with semi-double flowers, a deep bluish-purple, with a black and white eye. Remarkable en masse, this intermediate-sized variety is less sensitive to bad weather. Also very beautiful in a container near the house, or in bouquets, delphiniums thrive in the sun in rich, deep, permeable soils.

Delphinium 'Magic Fountain Dark Blue/Black Bee' is one of many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding with D. elatum, which gave birth to the famous 'Pacific Giant' series among others. Plants in the 'Magic Fountain' series do not exceed 1 m (3ft) in height, they flower in summer and withstand bad weather well, which generally exempts them from staking, outside of the windiest gardens. Delphinium Magic Fountain is a short-lived herbaceous perennial that forms a clump of finely cut palmate tender green leaves, from which floral stems of an average height of 90 cm (35in) emerge in summer, a rather modest size for a hybrid delphinium. This height allows it to better withstand the wind and not easily topple in the rain. Flowering takes place from June to September and is highly visited by pollinating insects. The flowers are semi-double, cup-shaped, gathered on tall upright spikes. In this Dark Blue Black Bee variety, the petals are dark violet-blue. The flower's centre is occupied by a small white throat and nearly black 'flies'. The plant grows from a woody rhizome that sinks into the soil. Its foliage is deciduous.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always brings volume, height, and charm to perennial beds. They are good companions for moss or gallica roses, with which they form charming and romantic compositions. You can also create a beautiful association with pink daylilies, mauve or blue panicled phlox, and panicled baby's breath. The flowers hold well and are good in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to allow better branching and obtain optimal rooting. This pruning also prevents the stems from breaking during transport.

Planting and care

Plant delphiniums in spring after the last frost, in a sunny location, in moist, rich, and well-drained soil. Leave at least two or three shoots on young plants and five to seven on well-established delphiniums. During growth, water once or twice a week and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. Remove faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small lateral flowering shoots. Cut back the entire plant to ground level in autumn. Protect your delphiniums from slugs and snails that are fond of their leaves.

Tip: Dare to go tall with these giant plants that structure and balance volumes in the garden. The tallest ones will add volume and lightness against a dark background of hedges or conifers. Intermediate-sized ones will dress up tall flower beds, such as those with giant dahlias. Take care to maintain the vegetation through regular watering. Keep an eye out for slugs.
