Shrubby alcalthaea 'Freedom'
Interesting plant, very floriferous but the prolonged heatwave, despite the waterings, hampers the pruning of the flowers and the number of branches. I had more well-developed flowers in previous years. Can they be pinched in early June?

Description
x Alcalthaea suffrutescens 'Freedom' bears an abundance of pale-pink double flowers with a garnet centre.
This hybrid plant, resulting from the cross-breeding of the tree mallow (Althea) and the hollyhock (Alcea), has taken the best of both worlds: namely, the shrub-like habit and longevity of one, and the vibrant colours and abundant flowering of the other.
This semi-evergreen perennial has a slender shrub-like habit, reaching a height of 1.7m (6ft) with a spread of 1m (3ft) when fully grown.
The flowers are smaller than those of its cousins but more numerous. They measure 4cm (2in) in diameter. They are double, with a pale-pink colour and a garnet centre.
Plant this perennial in full sun in rich, well-draining, and light soil. It pairs perfectly with roses, catmints, bellflowers, and yarrows.

Planting and care
Plant in the sun in rich and moist soil. Cut the flowers to make bouquets. Pruning stimulates vegetation and the plants will become stronger. You can also give them a shaping pruning in spring, especially if the cold has been very harsh. These plants have a lifespan of 5 to 6 years. In large flower beds, renew one plant out of three each year.

- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
