Description

'Agapanthus 'Peter Pan' is an evergreen Agapanthus with a compact habit, featuring beautiful light blue flowering, well suited for small spaces and pot cultivation. This lovely variety, ornamental all year round, produces numerous globular umbels of intense light blue flowers in summer, each trumpet-shaped flower highlighted by a darker midline. This variety is not very hardy: it will thrive on a sunny terrace or in beds under mild climates, in cool but well-drained soil with a tendency towards acidity.

Agapanthus are native to South Africa and belong to the Lily family. 'Peter Pan' is a recent cultivar that stands out mainly for its compact habit and fine foliage. This plant grows and multiplies rapidly from a stump with fleshy rhizomes, forming a dense clump of narrow linear foliage, shiny green, with a minimum diameter of 40cm (16in), expanding over time. Flowering takes place in summer, from June-July to September. Sturdy stems, about 60cm (24in) tall, bear large hemispherical umbels, 15cm (6in) in diameter, composed of about thirty intense lavender-blue campanulate flowers, veined with a darker blue, carried on long peduncles.

Agapanthus 'Peter Pan' brings a beautiful exotic touch to the garden with its large inflorescences that rise above a bouquet of lush foliage. The soothing and bright blue colour of the flowers, as well as their abundance, will add elegance to your flower beds. Unfortunately, it is semi-hardy and disappears below -6/-8°C (21.2/17.6°F), which is why it should be placed in a protected location facing south, and a thick mulch should be applied around its base. Whether in flower beds, borders, large rockeries, pots or containers, Agapanthus is suitable for a wide range of uses. It is particularly well-suited to mild coastal climates. It looks beautiful when combined with other white, mauve or blue varieties in a minimalist setting. It is also very decorative in flower beds with an exotic flair, alongside Kniphofias, Hemerocallis, and Phlomis fruticosa. In harsher climates, cultivate it in a pot that you will store indoors every winter.

Planting and care

Plant 'Peter Pan' Agapanthus stumps by covering them with at least 10cm (4in) of good soil so that they resist the cold better. It is essential to install them in spring and mulch them in winter. For pot cultivation, use 5 young plants for a 24cm (9in) pot and protect your pots in winter. They prefer a rich and moist but well-drained soil, enriched with sand. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them afterwards. They are sensitive to excess moisture in winter. This variety thrives particularly well in rockeries and containers. Use a well-drained sandy mixture, slightly acidic. This plant seems to prefer shallow containers and will flower abundantly if regularly fed with slow-release fertilizer.
