Description

Rhipsalis burchellii, sometimes nicknamed mistletoe cactus, is an epiphytic cactus that thrives indoors when provided with soft light and air that is not too dry. With a trailing habit and flexible growth, it is best in a hanging basket, on a bookshelf, or atop a piece of furniture, where its stems can extend freely. It has no thorns, so it can be handled easily and possesses a style very different from classic cacti.

This botanical species belongs to the Cactaceae family and originates from Brazil (South and Southeast). In the wild, it is found in the Atlantic coastal forests, where it lives attached to branches, as an epiphyte. Botanical synonyms include Erythrorhipsalis burchellii or the older name Rhipsalis cribrata (and Hariota cribrata).
The plant forms a well-branched clump of cylindrical, thin and pendulous stems with branching often in a "Y" shape; the final segments measure 4 to 10 cm, and the whole can trail up to 60 cm, or even more over time. The discreet flowering takes the form of small white flowers like bells, about 1 cm, followed by pink fruits. The mistletoe cactus is considered non-toxic for cats and dogs, although it is better to prevent pets from nibbling on it.

Indoors, it prefers bright light without direct sun, a rather humid atmosphere, and temperatures between 18 and 26 °C; it is important to avoid dropping below 10 °C for several days. This plant is suitable for beginners, provided care is taken regarding its main sensitivities: overwatering and cold shocks.

Due to its flexible and trailing stems, Rhipsalis burchellii is perfect in a hanging basket or on a high support, in a living room, conservatory, or bright bathroom. A hanging ceramic pot or macramé hanger will showcase its trailing foliage. It pairs well with other tropical plants such as Hoya bella, Philodendron scandens, or Epiphyllum anguliger, another epiphytic cactus.

Location

Position Rhipsalis burchellii near a bright window, but avoid direct sunlight on the stems, especially during the hottest hours: behind a sheer curtain or slightly set back suits it best. The more light it receives (without scorching), the more water it consumes. Avoid placing it close to a radiator, as hot, dry air quickly dehydrates the segments, and be cautious of cold draughts near a door or a slightly open window in winter.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water your cactus thoroughly and then allow the water to drain completely; wait until the top 2 to 5 cm of the substrate has dried out before watering again, and reduce the frequency of watering in winter; mist 2 to 3 times a week when the air is dry (during the heating season).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably at the beginning of spring, every 3 to 4 years or so, into a pot one size larger. This plant performs better when slightly pot-bound than in a large volume of damp compost.
Use a very airy mix that drains quickly: a good cactus compost or free-draining compost, lightened with perlite, and enriched with a little bark such as "orchid compost". The pot must have drainage holes, and do not allow water to collect in the bottom of the outer pot.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser for green plants: NPK 20-20-20 in spring and summer, once a week at a very diluted dose (about a quarter of the indicated dose), then stop applications in autumn/winter.

Houseplant care

Remove the dried segments and debris from the surface of the pot.
Pruning is not essential. Simply cut back any overly long or damaged stems with a clean, sharp tool to maintain a balanced shape.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Shower the plant to combat red spider mites.
