Description

The Philodendron scandens, also known as the Climbing Philodendron or Heartleaf Philodendron, is a popular houseplant prized for its decorative foliage and hardiness. This tropical climbing plant adapts easily to our indoor spaces, enhancing them with its lush abundance. Its ability to tolerate varying light conditions and minimal maintenance make it an ideal choice for all plant enthusiasts.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron scandens (synonymous with Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum) is native to the tropical forests of Central America and the Caribbean. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte, climbing up trees using its aerial roots. This plant exhibits either a climbing or trailing habit depending on how it is trained. Its stems can reach several metres in length when grown indoors. The heart-shaped leaves of this philodendron typically measure between 10 and 15 cm long and display a lustrous dark green colour. The growth of Philodendron scandens is rapid, especially when provided with optimal conditions. Indoors, it prefers bright, indirect light (protected from direct sunlight), moderate ambient humidity, and temperatures between 18 and 25°C.

Warning - This plant is toxic if ingested and its sap is irritating, so it should be kept out of reach of young children and pets.

The Climbing Philodendron can be used without any support to adorn shelves, hanging baskets, or as a climbing plant if provided with a moss pole or trellis. To create a harmonious arrangement, it can be paired with plants sharing similar needs such as the  Chlorophytum comosum or Monstera deliciosa.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately when the surface of the substrate is dry. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week to maintain adequate humidity. Ensure the substrate is well-drained to prevent root rot.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a rich, well-drained compost, made up of leaf mould, turf and a little coarse sand. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) every 4 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer). Dilute the fertiliser to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

It occasionally loses leaves, especially in winter. Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Remove damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

If mealybugs appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or 70% alcohol. For root rot, reduce watering.
