Description

Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie', also sold as Asplenium ‘Lesley’, is a highly decorative bird's nest fern, prized for its curly chicory foliage that unfurls in a rosette like a verdant nest. This indoor fern brings a great deal of freshness to gently lit rooms while improving air quality. It is an original and decorative variety, but it has specific needs in terms of humidity and watering.

Asplenium 'Leslie' belongs to the Aspleniaceae family. It is a cultivar of Asplenium antiquum, a fern native to the humid forests of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan), where it grows as an epiphyte on trunks and in the forks of trees or on mossy rocks. It is known by several names: Leslie's antique fern, Leslie's bird's nest fern, or Lesly's Asplenium.

Leslie's antique fern is evergreen and exhibits a compact rosette habit, resembling a deep nest from the centre of which new fronds unfurl. At maturity, it reaches 30 to 60 cm in height and approximately 40 to 60 cm in width. The fronds are narrow, leathery, and glossy, of a fresh to medium green, often slightly lighter when unfurling. They are upright then arching, 30 to 50 cm long, and feature a very undulate and crinkled margin, sometimes crested at the tip, which gives the plant its characteristic "frilly" appearance. There is no flowering: like all ferns, Asplenium reproduces by spores borne on the underside of the fronds, but this phenomenon remains discreet in a pot.

Indoors, Asplenium 'Leslie' appreciates soft to medium light, without direct sun: a spot near a north or east-facing window, or behind a sheer curtain, suits it very well. The growing medium should remain constantly slightly moist, never waterlogged. This fern enjoys a high ambient humidity, ideally around 60 to 70%. It thrives between 18 and 24°C. Non-toxic to pets, it is suitable for homes with cats or dogs.
The rooms best suited to its cultivation are a bright bathroom, a well-lit kitchen, and also a living room or bedroom with a gentle atmosphere, away from radiators and draughts.

The 'Leslie' bird's nest fern can be placed in a terracotta or ceramic cache-pot, set on a shelf, a sheltered windowsill, or at the foot of a large plant like Monstera 'Thai Constellation'. It can be combined with Fittonia 'Mini White' with white-veined leaves, which shares its preference for filtered light and humid air. To enhance the tropical woodland effect, place it near the 'Artic Jungle' Boston fern (Nephrolepis) in a bright bathroom: the trailing fronds of the Boston fern and the curly rosette of the Asplenium create a lush display, ideal on a console or low piece of furniture, or in a row on a shelf.

Location

Place the Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie' near a north or east-facing window, or close to a south/west window filtered by a sheer curtain. Position the pot a few tens of centimetres from the window rather than at the back of the room, to ensure sufficient light. Absolutely avoid direct sunlight which scorches the fronds, overly dry air near radiators, and hot or cold draughts (air conditioning, entrances, and frequently opened window). Do not place it in a windowless bathroom: lack of light would cause etiolation and frond drop.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Allow the surface of the compost to dry slightly to a depth of 1 cm before watering again. Water slowly until water drains from the drainage holes, then empty the saucer: the compost should remain moist, but never waterlogged. In winter, reduce watering, especially if the temperature drops towards 18°C. Avoid pouring water into the centre of the 'nest'; water around the edge of the pot or by soaking if the root ball has dried out a little too much. Supplement with misting on the foliage, preferably in the morning so the fronds dry during the day.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring, approximately every 2 to 3 years, or when the rosette fills the pot and becomes unstable. Choose a slightly wider pot with good drainage holes. Do not divide the root ball: this fern does not tolerate division of the centre of the nest well.
Use a potting mix for houseplants or ferns, enriched with organic matter (coconut fibre, well-rotted compost) and lightened with perlite or fine pumice to improve drainage. Place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot. The substrate should retain water without becoming waterlogged, to maintain constant moisture around the roots.
Use a liquid fertiliser for green plants, with an NPK close to 10-10-10 or 20-20-20, highly diluted (½ the manufacturer's recommended dose). Apply once a month from March to September, onto pre-moistened compost, avoiding any direct contact with the fronds. No fertiliser should be applied in autumn-winter. This is an undemanding fern: overly concentrated fertilisation easily burns the fronds and the base of the rosette.

Houseplant care

Remove the dry leaves and debris trapped in the centre of the nest regularly to prevent mould development. Dust the fronds with a slightly damp soft cloth. Turn the pot a quarter turn every two to three weeks to maintain well-balanced growth. Monitor the condition of the frond edges: browning tips often indicate air that is too dry or insufficient watering.
Pruning is limited to simply removing yellowed, brown or damaged fronds at their base, using a clean and well-sharpened tool, in order to maintain a neat and well-defined rosette.

Disease and pest advice

This fern remains robust if the air humidity is good and the substrate is not waterlogged. Problems mainly arise from overwatering or excessively dry air. In case of scale insects, isolate the plant, then wipe the fronds with a cotton pad soaked in soapy water (diluted black soap) or diluted alcohol, paying particular attention to the underside. Repeat several times at intervals of a few days.
