Description

Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana, nicknamed the Jade Necklace or Marnier's Rupestral Crassula, is a striking succulent plant valued for its stems covered in stacked leaves. In a pot, it is best placed on a shelf or in a hanging basket, from where its stems will eventually trail. This undemanding variety suits both minimalist and more bohemian settings. The essential thing is that it receives sufficient light.

Crassula marnieriana thrives outdoors from spring to autumn, where it benefits from generous light. It should be brought indoors before the first frosts and placed in a very bright spot.

Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana is native to southern Africa, widespread in South Africa, particularly in the Cape region, where it grows on rocky outcrops, in cracks and on very well-draining slopes. In a pot, it forms slender stems, initially upright, which gradually lengthen to cascade down; the plant reaches 15 to 25 cm in height. Its small, thick leaves, partially fused at the base, are tightly stacked along the stems; they are evergreen in winter, green to grey-green, with a well-defined reddish edge in bright light. Flowering occurs on well-established specimens, in small clusters of starry, pinkish-white flowers, typically in late winter or spring, depending on heat and light, sometimes slightly fragrant.
The toxicity of this subspecies is rarely documented; as a precaution, it is best kept away from animals that nibble on plants, as some Crassula species are toxic to dogs and cats.

Indoors, this Jade Necklace requires bright light, a rather dry atmosphere and temperatures generally between 10 and 25 °C. It is suitable for beginners, provided overwatering and stagnant moisture are avoided. This plant thrives in a bright living room, a temperate conservatory, or near a window in an office.

To showcase Crassula rupestris, choose a matte ceramic or terracotta pot that will accentuate its "bead-like" structure. It is perfect for a rock garden display, with a mulch of light-coloured gravel, or in a hanging basket near a large window. In a wide enough container, you can pair it with Echeveria ‘Perle von Nürnberg’, an Aeonium arboreum ‘Garnet’ or 'Schwarzkopf’. To enhance the trailing effect of the Jade Necklace, consider Ceropegia woodii ‘Variegata’. The shrubby Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’ will enrich this succulent plant display.

Location

Place your Crassula as close as possible to a very bright window, ideally facing south or west, to avoid etiolation. If you put it in direct sunlight, do so gradually over one to two weeks, especially after winter. The most common mistake is watering "out of habit" when the soil is not yet dry.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. In spring and summer, water thoroughly and then let it drain; in winter, water much less frequently and only when the potting mix is dry to the core. Do not mist: it prefers dry air, and water on the foliage encourages diseases.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably at the beginning of spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot.
Use a very free-draining mix: cactus compost (or light compost) enriched with mineral matter (perlite, pumice, coarse sand) so that the water drains away quickly. A pot with drainage holes is essential; a gravel mulch helps to keep the stems dry.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (e.g. NPK 10-10-10 or 8-8-8), at half strength, once a month during the growth period (spring to early autumn). Stop fertilising in winter.

Houseplant care

Simply remove any dry leaves at the base if they appear; leaf drop most often indicates a lack of light or an excess of water.
You can pinch back or shorten overly long stems in spring/summer to densify the plant; the cut segments root easily as cuttings once calloused.

Disease and pest advice

To combat mealybugs, isolate the plant and remove them with a cotton bud soaked in alcohol; repeat a few days later to eliminate the young ones. Also ensure the soil is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
