More information

Species recognizable by its very regular, compact, very light silver-blue rosette. It is a succulent perennial with thick, fleshy, flat leaves, as wide as spoons and covered with a grey to white bloom that produces this unique colour. In late spring, it bears short, arched stalks of clusters of bright orange-pink bells that beautifully enhance the pink and lilac shades of its foliage. Not very hardy but resistant to dryness, it is the perfect plant to decorate a Mediterranean rock garden and to create graphic pots that require little care and watering.

Description

Echeveria 'Perle Von Nürnberg' is one of the most well-known horticultural varieties due to its rosette of different colours, ranging from green to grey, with shades of purple, pink, and red. It is a perennial succulent plant with a compact rosette habit consisting of beautiful fleshy, rigid, ovate-triangular leaves covered with a bright silvery bloom in shade. The young foliage is fuchsia pink, then turns bluish violet and finally green-grey with age and in shaded areas. This variety also has the particularity of offering abundant summer flowering, sometimes producing up to 6 stalks, 40cm (16in) tall, with clusters of bell-shaped flowers ranging from orange-pink to reddish, highlighting the nuances of its highly graphic leaf rosette. It is a very easy plant to grow, requiring only a bright exposure and well-drained soil that remains very dry in winter. Not very hardy, it is suitable for open ground or Mediterranean rockeries.

Echevarias are perennial succulents belonging to the family Crassulaceae, known for their compact rosettes of highly graphic leaves. Native to dry, rocky areas in central Mexico, this genus is particularly sensitive to excessive water, requiring well-drained mineral-rich soil and a very bright exposure. Very drought-resistant, Echevarias thrive with occasional watering in summer. The plant tolerates little frost (down to -5°C) and is mainly grown in pots that are stored indoors away from frost from late autumn. Some privileged areas in the Mediterranean region can still accommodate this plant in dry rockeries and slopes.

Echeveria 'Perle Von Nürnberg' is a horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding between E. gibbiflora 'Metallica' and E. elegan 'Potosina', distinguished by its multicoloured rosette and the particularity of its more abundant flowering compared to other varieties. It is a perennial succulent plant with a compact solitary rosette habit forming along a short stem that remains barely visible and tends to bend under the weight of its foliage. With rapid growth, it reaches only 15cm (6in) in height with a maximum spread of 20cm (8in). The leaves are fleshy, thick, rigid, ovate-triangular, broadly rounded, and covered with a silvery bloom. Flowering occurs in summer, from July to August. It bears up to half a dozen clusters of bright reddish bell-shaped flowers, carried on long, erect, and then arching stalks 40cm (16in) long that emerge from the leaf axils.

Plant Echeveria 'Perle Von Nürnberg' in rockeries, on well-drained slopes, or at the edge of flower beds if your garden is located by the sea, where frosts do not exceed -5°C, alongside the Felicia amelloides Cape Aster, Delospermas, and purslanes that appreciate the same conditions. Elsewhere, you can plant it in a beautiful pot or container, alone or in combination with other Echevarias or other succulent plants such as Sempervivums (houseleeks), for example.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Perle Von Nürnberg' Echeveria in a pot in April or in the ground in May (in our mildest regions). It can be planted in full sun or in very bright partial shade, in a well-drained, light, sandy to rocky, fairly dry soil. This succulent does not tolerate frost below -4°C well, but it can tolerate it better if the substrate is well-drained and remains perfectly dry in winter. However, avoid excessively arid conditions and direct sunlight, especially behind a glass window. Use a very heavy pot, even a massive one, as the plant significantly gains weight with age. Use a cultivation substrate for succulent plants that is both draining and not too poor: a mix of leaf compost, pumice, and turf or coconut fibre. Regular but moderate watering is necessary throughout the growing season, especially in summer, where the substrate should be allowed to completely dry out between waterings.
