Dracaena is a popular houseplant prized for its graphic, elegant foliage. It is also easy to propagate. Propagation by cuttings lets you create new young plants from a single specimen to expand collection or share with friends. Follow our tips to multiply your Dracaena with no difficulty!

Dragon tree, a hardy houseplant

Dracaena, also known as dragon trees, are elegant, easy-to-care-for houseplants ideal for bright or lightly shaded rooms. Popular varieties include Dracaena marginata with its narrow leaves edged red, Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana), and Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon surprise' or Dracaena reflexa 'Song of India' with exotic foliage. These plants prefer well-drained soil and moderate watering, allowing substrate to dry out between waterings.

When to propagate a Dracaena?

The best time to propagate Dracaena is spring or summer. During this active growth period, mild temperatures and natural light encourage rapid rooting. Avoid winter, when growth slows.

Which propagation method to choose for Dracaena?

Dracaena is multiplied by propagation by cuttings of stem sections or by tip cuttings. You can also use air layering on larger specimens.

  • Method 1: take top of stem, 10–15 cm long, ideally with a few leaves.
  • Method 2: cut stem segments (7–10 cm) containing several nodes. Plant vertically or horizontally.

Once stem pieces are prepared, proceed with propagation. You can root cuttings in water (roots appear in 2–8 weeks) or in soil (rooting in 4–10 weeks). We explain correct techniques below.

Dracaena can be propagated in water or in potting mix by inserting stem or laying a stem section on substrate.
Dracaena can be propagated in different ways: in water or in potting mix by inserting stem or laying a stem section on substrate.

Necessary equipment

  • Pruning shear clean and sharp
  • Pot with drainage holes (or clear glass for water propagation)
  • Well-draining substrate (light potting compost + sand or special cutting mix)
  • Rooting hormone (optional)
  • Support or stake for stabilisation

Steps to propagate a Dracaena

  1. Disinfect pruning shear with alcohol or antiseptic solution.
  2. Choose healthy stem: straight, free of blemishes, 10–15 cm long.
  3. Cut on the slant, just below a node, without crushing stem.
  4. Remove lower leaves to reduce evaporation.
  5. (Optional) Apply rooting hormone when planting in substrate.

Plant the cutting

  • In water: immerse base in clear glass, change water 1–2 times per week.
  • In soil: plant in well-draining mix, vertically (two-thirds inserted) or flat if using stem-section cuttings (insert halfway).
  • Place in bright spot, out of direct sun, at stable temperature (20–25 °C).
  • Maintain humidity: mist if needed, avoid waterlogging.

After propagation: care and maintenance

  • Repot once roots are well developed (usually after 1–2 months).
  • Indirect light recommended to avoid scorching.
  • Moderate watering: keep soil moist but never waterlogged.
  • Ideal temperature: between 20 and 25 °C.
  • Mild fertiliser (optional) from spring, every 4–6 weeks.
