Geum, also known as Avens, is a pretty perennial, which has come back into favour in recent years. It produces charming airy flowers in bright colours that pair easily with other perennials or spring bulbs.

Discover our ideas and inspiration for pairing Geum in the garden!

Difficulty

Avens in a naturalistic garden

Make way for vibrant, deep colours for a bohemian naturalistic atmosphere! Don’t hesitate to pair orange with purple, two complementary colours that contrast and catch the eye. In this case, feel free to indulge and create a scene with an abundance of very colourful flowers.

Pair orange geums with sages that bear violet spikes. Add linarias, mulleins, carmine-coloured cosmos, marigolds to play off the geums, ornamental alliums, and don’t forget pretty cerinthes that you will let self-seed.

Do add a few grasses, essential in a naturalistic garden: stipes or melicas, for example.

Wood avens in a shaded area

Avens thrive in partial shade. Make the most of it to create pretty woodland scenes! To do so, pair them with handsome fronds of ferns, hostas, bugles, columbines, astrantias and other beauties that appreciate cool, dappled conditions. Choose light colours: white, pale yellow to brighten and create contrast with foliage.

To this scene you can add white astrantias, ‘Yellow Queen’ columbines and Iris sibirica ‘Dreaming Yellow’ for a fresh, elegant ambience. Also consider hostas, rodgersias and Japanese primulas.

Finally, don’t hesitate to play with differences in leaf shapes and textures!

Avens in a romantic border

Geum often declinate in warm, vivid colours but some varieties offer softer shades. This makes them easier to incorporate into a romantic setting. You can pair them with roses, peonies, avens, burnets, scabious or pretty poppies.

Complete the scene with asters to flower in autumn.

Wood avens for borders

Geums are perfect border plants! Not too tall, they accompany catmints, centauries, veronicas, small salvias and companions. To flower earlier in spring, also plant Scilla peruviana and Pulsatilla, whose faded flowers remain very decorative.

You can also combine different varieties to create a colour gradient such as ‘Mai Tai’, ‘Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Bell Banks’. Add some pink columbines. Then sow some Geranium pyrenaicum. It will look superb!

Avens with ornamental foliage

Gardeners know well, decorative foliage is very valuable in the garden as it pleases the eye for much of the year and even all year for evergreens. Among these elegant foliage plants, you can choose from a wide range of hostas, heucheras, ferns, lamiums or Myosotis from the Caucasus. Think of ornamental grasses, euphorbias (some are variegated), hardy geraniums or New Zealand iris in mild climates. Then simply tuck in some small geums to add a few bright touches.

Incorporating Geum into the Garden

Geum, commonly known as Avens, is a delightful addition to any garden, offering a splash of colour and a touch of elegance. These perennials are not only beautiful but also remarkably versatile, thriving in a variety of garden settings. Whether you're looking to enhance your borders, create a vibrant container display, or establish a charming cottage garden, Geum is an excellent choice.

### Ideal Locations for Geum

Geum thrives in well-drained soil and can adapt to both full sun and partial shade. This makes them perfect for several garden spots:
- **Borders:** Their bright, semi-double to double flowers bring life to garden borders. Plant them alongside other perennials that enjoy similar conditions, such as Salvia or Iris.
- **Rock Gardens:** The compact form of some Geum varieties makes them suitable for rock gardens, where their vivid blooms can stand out against the stones.
- **Woodland Edges:** For gardens with dappled shade, planting Geum at the edge of a woodland area can create a natural, wild look.

### Caring for Geum

To ensure your Geum plants thrive, consider the following tips:
- **Soil:** They prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Amending the soil with compost can enhance growth.
- **Watering:** Geum needs regular watering, especially during dry spells. However, avoid waterlogging as this can lead to root rot.
- **Feeding:** A balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring can promote lush growth and vibrant blooms.
- **Deadheading:** Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms and extend the flowering period.

### Popular Varieties of Geum

Several varieties of Geum can add different hues and textures to your garden:
- **Geum 'Mrs. J. Bradshaw':** Known for its fiery red flowers, this variety is a showstopper.
- **Geum 'Lady Stratheden':** With its bright yellow blooms, it can light up any garden space.
- **Geum 'Totally Tangerine':** Offering a softer approach with apricot-toned flowers, this variety is excellent for creating a warm, inviting garden atmosphere.

### Conclusion

Geum is a robust and attractive choice for any gardener looking to add long-lasting colour and interest to their garden. With minimal care requirements and a variety of vibrant colours, these plants can transform your outdoor space into a lively and enchanting environment. Whether planted in masses or as individual accents, Geum is sure to captivate and charm any garden visitor.
