Description

Geum coccineum 'Eos' is a robust and carefree perennial. From May to July, it produces delicate bright orange flowers on short, branched stems above bright golden semi-evergreen foliage. The wild-looking flowers and dazzling foliage will brighten up borders with their dawn-like hues!

'Eos' belongs to the Rosaceae family. It forms a compact, spreading clump and has rough-textured, semi-evergreen, chartreuse-yellow leaves that are very bright. From May to July, it bears clusters of two to four cup-shaped flowers, measuring 2cm (1in) in diameter, in a bright orange colour. They are borne on short, branched stems above the foliage. This variety reaches a height of about 30cm (12 in) with a spread of 40cm (16in). Like many perennials with long flowering periods, this avens is not very long-lived, so it is advisable to divide it every two to three years to keep it in the garden for a long time.

To fully enjoy its magnificent golden foliage, place this lovely variety in a sunny spot, at the edge of borders, flower beds, mixed borders, rockeries, or even in a container. It can also find its place in shaded areas of the garden, where its vibrant foliage will bring much-needed cheer. However, it will be less floriferous in shady situations. It requires space to develop so leave enough clearance around its base. It will beautifully complement perennials with colourful foliage. In partial shade, it will go well with other geum plants, epimedium, euphorbia, and ornamental grasses. By mixing several varieties of avens together, you can create sublime colour harmonies. In full sun, it will perfectly match daylilies, lychnis, perennial cinquefoils, wallflowers, and hardy geraniums.

Planting and care

'Eos' is hardy to at least -15°C (5°F). It appreciates a sunny to semi-shady, open location, as well as normal to rich, light, moist, and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate winter humidity, so avoid waterlogged soils during winter. Planting can be done in spring or autumn. Regularly removing faded flowers will encourage new flower buds to form and ensure continuous flowering. Since its lifespan is relatively short, dividing the clumps every 3 or 4 years in spring or autumn is recommended. Regular organic fertilisation is beneficial for them. Highly resistant to diseases, it is sometimes susceptible to sawfly larvae attacks, which can damage the foliage. Excessive drought can cause powdery mildew.
