Abundant and long flowering. Not very demanding in terms of hydration. Some long-term work to be expected if one wants to remove the faded flowers as they appear.

Description

The hybrid Avens or Geum 'Totally Tangerine' is a recent American creation that stands out for its excellent floribundity, reliability, and the vibrant and fruity colour of its pretty semi-double flowers. It will flower all summer, bearing apricot-toned flowers veined with tangerine orange, on sturdy and branching stems that do not require staking. Its bright green foliage perfectly highlights its dazzling flowering. A hardy and carefree perennial, this Avens will faithfully rebloom every year. Straightforward and robust, Avens are making a comeback in our gardens and terraces, in sunny, well-drained, and fertile soil.

The Geum are herbaceous perennials from the rose family, very hardy, originating from the temperate or colder regions of the northern and southern hemispheres. Crossed together, they have given rise to numerous hybrids including 'Totally Tangerine', recently introduced in the United States. This semi-evergreen variety forms a clump and has upright basal leaves, fairly deep but bright green, irregular and finely velvety, measuring 10 cm (4in) long. This Avens displays, on thin branching stems, gracefully held above the foliage, clusters bearing two to four cup-shaped flowers, 4 cm (2in) in diameter, slightly translucent orange, animated by well-visible veins, and enhanced by a prominent heart of yellow stamens. This variety reaches a height of 70 to 80 cm (28 to 32in) and a width of about 40 cm. Like many long-flowering perennials, this Avens has a relatively short lifespan, so it is advisable to divide it every three years to keep it in the garden for a long time. This variety does not produce seeds.

Hardy and very floriferous, the Avens is an easy plant, and very accommodating due to its simplicity and solidity. It appreciates sunny or semi-shaded situations and grows in ordinary, moist but well-drained soil. To fully enjoy its magnificent flowering, this lovely variety, 'Totally Tangerine', will ideally be placed at the edge of borders, flower beds, mixed borders, in rockeries, or even planted in a pot. Its flower spikes will make beautiful bouquets. Requiring some space to develop properly, it is important to leave enough clearance around its base. It will blend beautifully with other spring and summer-flowering perennials. In partial shade, it will pair well with Pasqueflowers, Lady's Mantles, Spurges, and Grasses. By mixing several varieties of Avens together, you can create sublime colour harmonies! In full sun, it will perfectly complement Daylilies, Black-Eyed Susans, Scabious, Shrubby Wallflowers, and Hardy Geraniums.

Planting and care

The Geum 'Totally Tangerine', hardy to at least -15°C (5°F), appreciates a sunny or partially shaded location, open, as well as ordinary to rich, light, moist, and well-drained soil. Benoites, not tolerating winter humidity, should avoid waterlogged soils in winter.

Planting can be done in spring or autumn. Be sure to regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the emergence of new flower buds and ensure continuous flowering. Since the lifespan of Geum is quite short, it is recommended to divide the clumps every 3 or 4 years, in spring or autumn. Regular organic fertilization is beneficial for them.

Highly resistant to diseases, Benoites are sometimes susceptible to sawfly larvae attacks, which can damage the foliage. Excessive drought can also make Benoites susceptible to powdery mildew.
