Description
The Ballerina® ‘Bolero’ columnar apple tree is a variety with a naturally narrow habit, particularly useful when space is limited. Its compact growth makes it suitable for a small garden, an orchard, a fruit hedge, or even a large container on the patio. It offers decorative spring flowering, followed by September dessert apples of medium size, light green to yellow, with crisp, sweet and juicy flesh. For a good harvest, it is best to pair it with the Ballerina® ‘Maypole’ columnar apple tree.
The apple tree, Malus domestica, has been cultivated in Europe for a very long time. The Ballerina® series comprises varieties selected for their columnar habit, inherited from a natural mutation discovered on a ‘McIntosh’ type apple tree, known as ‘Wijcik’.
‘Bolero’ is one of these selections obtained at East Malling, England, with the aim of combining quality fruit with a very narrow habit. This variety forms a small deciduous tree, taller than it is wide, with few lateral branches.
The fruit forms close to the main axis, on short spurs. Growth is moderate to medium depending on the rootstock and growing conditions. At maturity, this apple tree has a width of less than one metre. Its foliage consists of ovate, dentate leaves of a bright green. The spring flowering is white to pinkish-white. It can be susceptible to late frosts depending on the region. The fruit reaches ripeness in September. They are medium-sized, rounded, with smooth skin, light green, washed with more or less golden yellow on the sun-exposed side. The flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, with a slight acidic freshness depending on the degree of ripeness.
This variety is a good dessert apple, but it can also be used in desserts or compotes. The apples keep for a few weeks in a cool, dark, frost-free and well-ventilated location, at a steady temperature of around 4 to 7 °C. Only store healthy, unbruised fruit, picked with their stalks, arranged in a single layer without touching each other.
This Ballerina® ‘Bolero’ apple tree can be used wherever space is limited. It allows you to introduce a fruit tree into a small garden, along a path, or on a sunny patio. Its columnar habit lends itself well to planting in a row or in a fruit hedge. It can be paired with other columnar fruit trees to create a small, space-saving orchard.

Planting and care
Choose a sunny spot for your Ballerina ® 'Bolero' columnar apple tree; the soil can be slightly lime-bearing or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Add organic matter (compost, potting soil…) and a base fertiliser such as ground horn meal at the same time. Do not bury the graft union. Stake if necessary. Water generously, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of frost periods. Plants supplied in containers can be planted all year round, except during periods of extreme heat or frost.
In winter, you can add a small shovel of wood ash, rich in potash; this will improve fruiting. Monitor for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white felting caused by a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer; this is not detrimental to fruit development in gardens. The harvest takes place in September. Only keep the picked fruits. Store the apples with the stalk facing downwards, on slatted shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry and cool place, but frost-free.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
