Directions for use A spade is primarily used for manually loosening the soil in small areas with light soils. It should be driven into the soil, using weight to press against the footrests and handle. The handle should then be tilted backwards to lift and turn the clod. If the soil is too compact, use the sharp edge of the blade to cut into the clods and crumble them. Versatile in nature, use a spade for planting and incorporating amendments in the soil. It makes it easy to uproot perennial stumps and divide them into clumps, which can be replanted elsewhere in the garden. It can also be used for light excavations or to eliminate weeds with vigorous roots. For rocky soils, choose a fork-spade or a shovel for heavy soils. For surface soil aeration without disturbing the micro-fauna, opt for a rake.
