Description

Impatiens 'Sunpatiens Compact Orchid Blush' is an exceptional variety of Impatiens: more dense and compact, it tolerates all exposures and adapts equally well to cool climates as to hot regions of our country. Covered with delicately coloured flowers pale orchid pink from June to the first frost, resistant to diseases and not very fragile, it is a truly easy and generous plant. It can be adopted without hesitation in a flower box on the windowsill, in a pretty pot on the terrace, or planted in a large border along a path or wall.

The SunPatiens® of the Compact series are the result of hybridization work that has allowed the development of resistant and floriferous plants from New Guinea Impatiens. Belonging to the Balsaminaceae family, they are perennials that are grown as annuals in our latitudes, as they will not withstand the first frost. However, they have many other advantages, awarded in 2006 in Italy (among others, best bedding plant): they are robust, vigorous, and require no maintenance. Their compact ball-shaped habit allows for a beautiful rounded effect without pruning, with a height of 40cm (16in) (more in hot climates) and a minimum spread of 30cm (12in). Their numerous leaves are green and shiny, oval in shape, with dentate edges and ending in a point. From the end of spring, multiple flowers appear and continue to bloom until autumn. They measure 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter and are made up of five heart-shaped petals that are widely spread. In this 'Orchid Blush' variety, their pale pink hue washed with mauve is particularly refined. It coordinates with many other pastel colours to create romantic ensembles. It is also a plant that has some original characteristics: studies have shown that Impatiens have the ability to absorb harmful gases and lower the ambient temperature. They are therefore considered depolluting or purifying plants.

In containers on the terrace or in pots near entrances, the 'SunPatiens® Compact Orchid Blush' offer you abundant flowering without worry and almost no maintenance, except for regular watering in hot and dry periods. Preferring moist and rich soils, they will also tolerate full sun exposure and accept semi-shaded or even shaded situations. When planted in groups, they quickly form impressive and colorful flower beds. When planted individually, they enhance the sometimes too gentle summer blooms. You can pair them with Impatiens Sunpatiens Compact Blanc or Pink, Lobelias Hot Purple or Hot Blue, or Calibrachoa Noa Blue Legend, for example.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has been definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

The Impatiens Sunpatiens compact Orchid is easy to grow. It should be placed in full sun or partial shade. Plant it in the ground in spring from March to May, after the last frost, as Impatiens cannot tolerate freezing temperatures, for flowering from June until the first frosts in October. To accelerate its growth, pre-cultivate it in a pot in a warm and bright location. Place the Impatiens in a fresh, well-drained soil that is rich in humus. Water it generously, but be careful not to overwater. Pruning is not necessary. Very floriferous and fast-growing, it is hungry for nutrients. Feed it with a liquid fertiliser for container plants once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep it looking beautiful and prolong flowering. Be aware that it needs protection from slugs, which enjoy its young leaves, but otherwise the Impatiens Sunpatiens compact is disease-resistant.
