Description

Verbena x hybrida 'Tuscany Pastel Mixed' is a variety of Garden Verbena with large flowers in a delicate mix of pastel shades. Vigorous, resistant, and floriferous, it will enchant you throughout the summer. Remarkable both in borders and in pots.

Highly appreciated for their generous flowering and vibrant colors, Garden Verbenas, also known as Verbena hortensis, are perennial plants with low hardiness. A disadvantage widely compensated for by their ease of cultivation and the duration of their flowering, which extends from June to September. Versatile, they can be used in borders, flower beds, or even in pots.

The 'Tuscany Pastel Mixed' Garden Verbena has a compact habit, reaching a height of 25cm (10in) and a width of 30cm (12in). It can be easily paired with Diascias, Ornamental Tobacco, and more, both in borders and in pots.

Native to South America and belonging to the Verbenaceae family, Verbena x hybrida, as its name suggests, is the result of hybridization. It bears finely dissected flowers arranged in umbels, like small flat bouquets measuring 6 to 8cm (2 to 3in), with colors varying depending on the varieties. Its leaves are finely dissected, sometimes lobed, and of a beautiful medium green. It is a nectar-rich plant that is highly attractive to butterflies.

Garden Verbenas thrive in sunny locations with rich, well-drained soil. When grown in pots, be careful not to apply too much nitrogen fertilizer, as it can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Easy to grow, Garden Verbenas may occasionally be susceptible to fungal diseases (mildew, powdery mildew), a nuisance that can be easily avoided by not planting them in confined areas and avoiding wetting their foliage during watering. It is also important to watch out for possible attacks by red spider mites, thrips, and slugs. To encourage and support its long flowering period, regularly remove faded flowers.

These attentions will be greatly rewarded!

Planting and care

Sow from February to April, either in a seed tray or directly in pots filled with a good seed compost kept slightly moist. Do not cover the seeds. Place the container in a well-lit, warm location maintained at 24-27 °C (75.2-80.6°F). Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the young plants are strong enough to handle, transplant if necessary into pots and gradually acclimatize the young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in the garden with a spacing of 35cm (14in).
