Description

Balloon flower Fuji White which is better known by its Latin name Platycodon grandiflorus Fuji White is a herbaceous perennial renowned for the immaculate hue its flowers take on after full bloom.

Native to East Asia, balloon flower grows in meadows at medium altitudes. Its 3 to 5 cm long, oval or lanceolate leaves display finely toothed margins that form a small compact, bluish-green mound, from which thin stems bearing groups of flowers grow in July-August. As the yellow-green flower buds develop, they swell like little balloons before fully opening at full bloom and taking on their immaculate white colour. This is why it is called a balloon flower.

The bell-shaped flowers are made up of 5 pointy petals and measure 3 to 5 cm in diameter.

Once in bloom, the whole plant is about 40 cm high and 30 cm wide.

Perfectly hardy, Platycodon likes a mostly sunny position and a rich soil that is imperatively well-drained.

It is a good plant for borders or for decorating pots on the patio. The balloon flower lends itself very well to the creation of summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow Platycodon grandiflorius Fuji White from February to June, in a seed tray. Use good quality soil that you will sift on the surface in order to bind the seed to the growing medium. Before sowing, lightly tamp the soil down with a small board of wood. Broadcast your seeds. Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil or vermiculite over them. Tamp down lightly and water generously with a fine spray. Place your seed tray in a bright location without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 18 °C to 20°c. Lower the temperature at night to 16° creating a temperature variation beneficial for germination.

Germination will take 14 to 30 days. As soon as the seedlings can be handled, transplant them into 7 cm pots. Keep the soil moist, but not wet during growth. Then, 15 days before planting them out in their final position, start to acclimatize them gradually to a temperature of 15 °C.

At the end of May, beginning of June, temperatures in the garden will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a site with plenty of sunshine. Add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 cm apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to keep the plant tidy-looking and encourage flower renewal.
